Rutherglen is a small town in north-eastern Victoria, Australia, near the Murray River border with New South Wales. The town was named after the Scottish town of Rutherglen which lies just outside Glasgow. At the , Rutherglen had a population of 2,109. Features Rutherglen is located north of Wangaratta and west of Wodonga, just 10 kilometres from the Murray River at the border towns of Wahgunyah and Corowa. The electoral district of Benambra is one of the electoral districts of Victoria, Australia, for the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of in north-eastern Victoria. Michael Joseph Savage
Michael Joseph Savage (23 March 1872 – 27 March 1940) was a New Zealand politician who served as the 23rd prime minister of New Zealand, heading the First Labour Government from 1935 until his death in 1940. Savage was born in the Colony of Victoria (present-day Australia), and emigrated to New Zealand in 1907. A labourer, he became a trade unionist, and in 1910 was elected president of the Auckland Trades and Labour Council. Savage supported the formation of the New Zealand Labour Party in July 1916. He was active in local politics before his election to the House of Representatives in 1919, as one of eight Labour members returned in that election. John Harris (Victorian Politician)
Sir John Richards Harris (24 January 1868 – 16 September 1946) was an Australian politician. A medical officer in early life, he is also noted as the first producer of sherry in Australia. Life He was born in Chiltern to miner Thomas Henry Harris and Mary Richards Hollow. He attended Grenville College in Ballarat and then the University of Melbourne ( MB 1890, BSc 1891, MD 1902). From 1891 to 1892 he was the resident medical officer at Melbourne Hospital, and from 1892 was based in Rutherglen. Harris served with the Australian Flying Corps during World War I. At Rutherglen he had become a viticulturist, producing the first sherry in Australia in 1912. The Tallangatta and District Football League (TDFL) is an Australian rules football competition in north-east Victoria and the southern border area of Riverina region of the New South Wales. The clubs compete across four competitions, two of which are age restricted (Under 17s, and Under 14s). The Rutherglen Football and Netball Club is an Australian rules football and netball club playing their home games in Rutherglen, Victoria, Australia. The current Rutherglen FNC was created after the merger of Ovens & Murray Football League sides Rutherglen Football Club (1893), Rutherglen and Corowa Football Club, Corowa in 1979. Surplus players formed the Corowa-Rutherglen Football Club, Corowa-Rutherglen FC and played in the Coreen & District Football League for 13 years. The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (O&MFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition containing ten clubs based in north-eastern Victoria, the southern Riverina region of New South Wales and the Ovens and Murray area. The name comes from the Ovens River, the river in the part of north-eastern Victoria covered by the league, and the Murray River, which separates Victoria and New South Wales. The league features three grades in the Australian rules football competition, with these being First-Grade, Reserve-Grade and Under 18s. In the netball competition, there are four grades, with these being A-Grade, B-Grade, C-Grade and Under 16s. Currently a home and away season consisting of eighteen rounds is played. Wahgunyah, Victoria
Wahgunyah is a town in northeastern Victoria, Australia. The town is on the southern bank of the Murray River, opposite Corowa, New South Wales, in the Shire of Indigo. Wahgunyah is north east of the state capital, Melbourne and west of Albury/Wodonga. At the , Wahgunyah had a population of 1,098. The name is believed to be an aboriginal phrase meaning the resting place of crows. History The Wahgunyah cattle run was leased by John Foord and John Crisp in 1841. Muscadelle
Muscadelle is a white wine grape variety. It has a simple aroma of grape juice and raisins like grapes of the Muscat family of grapes, but it is unrelated. DNA analysis has indicated that Muscadelle is a cross between Gouais blanc and an unidentified grape variety. Wine regions In France, it is a minor constituent in the dry and sweet wines of Bordeaux, such as Sauternes.
