Ruth Smith (artist)
Ruth Smith Nielsen (5 April 1913 in Vágur – 26 May 1958) was a Faroese artist. Smith lived for some years in Denmark, where she was educated as a painter: first. at the Bizzie Højer Art School, and, later, at the Art Academy of Copenhagen. Smith married the architect Poul Morell Nielsen in 1945. They lived in Lemvig, Denmark. Later, with her husband, she moved back to the Faroe Islands; and in the last years of her life she lived in the small village of Nes, which is located on the fjord Vágsfjørður between the villages Vágur, where she was born, and Porkeri. Smith enjoyed swimming in the sea; in 1958, she drowned while swimming in Vágsfjørður. Work Ruth Smith dealt with colours more sensitively than many of her contemporaries. She caught the Faroese light in her pictures, and the colours vibrate under brush lines. Inspired by Cézanne, her landscapes have Impressionist influences. Rose Mary Crawshay Prize
The Rose Mary Crawshay Prize is a literary prize for female scholars, inaugurated in 1888 by the British Academy. Description The prize, set up in 1888, is said by the British Academy to be the only UK literary prize specifically for female scholars. Two prizes can be awarded in any year, each "to a woman of any nationality who, in the judgement of the Council of the British Academy, has written or published within three years next preceding the year of the award an historical or critical work of sufficient value on any subject connected with English Literature, preference being given to a work regarding one of the poets Byron, Shelley and Keats". The prize is now "only" £500, but it provides a valuable recognition for non-fiction women writers. It has been awarded since 1916 by the British Academy. ''Gavin & Stacey'' is a British sitcom written by James Corden and Ruth Jones about two families: one in Billericay, Essex; one in Barry, South Wales.
