Russells Mills Village Historic District
The Russells Mills Village Historic District is a historic district on Russells Mills, Rock O' Dundee, Slades Corner, Horseneck and Fisher Roads in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. It encompasses an area that was an early industrial center, flourishing from the 18th century into the early 19th century. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Description and history Russells Mills Village is approximately south of US Route 6, on the western bank of the Paskamanset River. The village is mainly stretched along Russells Mills and Horseneck Roads, and radiates along several other roads that extend from the village center. Just south of the village is a former mill pond that is one of the surviving elements of the village's industrial past. The village has about forty buildings, most of them wood-frame residences built in the 18th and early 19th centuries. US Route 6
U.S. Route 6 (US 6), also called the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, honoring the American Civil War veterans association, is a main route of the U.S. Highway system. While it currently runs east-northeast from Bishop, California, to Provincetown, Massachusetts, the route has been modified several times. The highway's longest-lasting routing, from 1936 to 1964, had its western terminus at Long Beach, California. During this time, US 6 was the longest highway in the country. Davolls General Store
Davoll's General Store is a general store in the Russells Mills Village Historic District in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, United States. It is owned by brothers Will and Ben Shattuck. It is the oldest continually operating General Store in Massachusetts, established in 1793. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, coupled with the entire Russells Mills area. History The lot was originally owned by brothers John, Daniel, and Giles Russell. The building where the store would be created was purchased in 1780 by Michael Wainer, who sold the building to William Howland in 1792; however, Howland did not start using the building as a general store until 1793. The store changed hands several times over the course of the 1800s, but primarily stayed in the hands of the Howlands, Tuckers, and Slocums. Padanaram, Massachusetts
Padanaram is a coastal village in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, United States. The village is located on Buzzards Bay, more specifically near the inlet of Apponagansett Bay. History The village of Padanaram was one of many settlements that began cropping up within the town of Old Dartmouth after its purchase from the Wampanoag by members of the Plymouth Colony in 1652. During King Philip's War, English colonists residing in the area took shelter at Russell Garrison. Remains of the settlement can still be seen at the foot of Lucy Street. In the mid-18th century it became a shipbuilding center. In September 1778, during the American Revolution, the British attacked nearby New Bedford with a small force attacking Padanaram.
