Russellite Unionist
The Russellite group were the followers of Thomas Wallace Russell, an Irish political leader of the early twentieth century. Russell was the Liberal Unionist MP for South Tyrone. He and some followers left the party in February 1904. Sir Thomas Russell, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Wallace Russell, 1st Baronet (28 February 1841 – 2 May 1920), was an Irish politician and agrarian agitator. Born at Cupar, Fife, Scotland, he moved to County Tyrone at the age of eighteen. James Wood (Irish Politician)
James Wood (17 July 1867 – 31 October 1936) was an Irish land refomer and, as a Russellite Unionist, was a Member of the United Kingdom Parliament (MP) for East Down. Supported by what the Unionist leader Edward Carson described as "an unholy alliance of Catholics and Protestants", he was elected as a Russellite Unionist MP for the East Down constituency in a 1902 by-election, defeating Carson's candidate, the local landlord Colonel R.H. Wallace of Myra Castle. The victory boosted Thomas Russell's campaign for compulsory, and assisted, land sales to tenants, which won a measure of success in the Wyndham Land Act of 1903. Wood, standing as a Liberal, lost his seat at the 1906 general election to the Unionst James Craig. He lost again to Craig in the January 1910 general election. North Tyrone (UK Parliament Constituency)
North Tyrone was a UK parliamentary constituency in Ireland. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the British House of Commons 1885–1918. Prior to the 1885 United Kingdom general election the area was part of the Tyrone constituency. From the dissolution of Parliament in 1918 North Tyrone became part of the new North-West Tyrone constituency. Notably, from 1895 until its abolition in 1918 the seat elected four Liberal MPs in succession by narrow margins; they were the only Liberals elected anywhere in Ireland during this time period, and remain the last MPs from a mainland party other than the Conservatives and their allies to represent a seat in the UK Parliament on the island of Ireland. January 1910 United Kingdom General Election
The January 1910 United Kingdom general election was held from 15 January to 10 February 1910. The government called the election in the midst of a constitutional crisis caused by the rejection of the People's Budget by the Conservative-dominated House of Lords, in order to get a mandate to pass the budget. The general election resulted in a hung parliament, with the Conservative Party led by Arthur Balfour and their Liberal Unionist allies receiving the most votes, but the Liberals led by H. H. Asquith winning the most seats, returning two more MPs than the Conservatives. Asquith's government remained in power with the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party, led by John Redmond. Another general election was soon held in December. The Labour Party, led by Arthur Henderson, returned 40 MPs. North Fermanagh was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland which returned one Member of Parliament from 1885 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system. Boundaries and Boundary Changes This county constituency comprised the northern part of County Fermanagh. The seat was defined under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 as comprising the baronies of Lurg, Magheraboy, and Tirkenny. The seat was unchanged under the Redistribution of Seats (Ireland) Act 1918. Prior to the 1885 United Kingdom general election the area was part of the Fermanagh constituency. 1900 United Kingdom General Election
The 1900 United Kingdom general election was held between 26 September and 24 October 1900, following the dissolution of Parliament on 25 September. Also referred to as the Khaki Election (the first of several elections to bear this sobriquet), it was held at a time when it was widely believed that the Second Boer War had effectively been won (though in fact it was to continue for another two years). The Conservative Party, led by Lord Salisbury with their Liberal Unionist allies, secured a large majority of 134 seats, despite securing only 5.6% more votes than Henry Campbell-Bannerman's Liberals. This was largely owing to the Conservatives winning 163 seats that were uncontested by others.
