Russell Taylor (cartoonist)
Russell Philip Taylor MBE (born 8 July 1960) is a British writer, journalist and composer. He is best known as half of the team (with Charles Peattie) that created the comic strip Alex. Education Taylor studied at Abingdon School from 1973–1978. During his time at the school he was on the editorial board of ''The Abingdonian''. He then read Russian and Philosophy at St Anne's College, Oxford. Alex Alex was created by Taylor and Charles Peattie and it first appeared in the ''London Daily News'' which ran from 24 February to 23 July 1987. The cartoon then appeared in ''The Independent'' during 1987 before moving to ''The Daily Telegraph'' in 1992. The cartoon strip was so popular that it was subject to a nationwide billboard campaign before it switched to ''The Daily Telegraph''. Taylor is a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur football club, and as a private joke (and to avoid libel accusations) always names characters who are fired in the ''Alex'' strip after Tottenham footballers. ... Charles Peattie (born 3 April 1958) is a British cartoonist, best known as half of the team (with Russell Taylor) that creates the comic strip Alex. He has two daughters and two sons, and lives in London. He was appointed MBE in the 2002 Honours List. Saving Africa's Witch Children
''Saving Africa's Witch Children'' is a documentary directed by Mags Gavan and Joost van der Valk. It features Gary Foxcroft and his organisation Stepping Stones Nigeria who campaign against the branding of children as witches in Nigeria, primarily by the evangelical "Liberty Foundation Gospel Ministries", headed by Helen Ukpabio. In some of the poorest parts of Nigeria, Pentecostal evangelical religious fervour is combined with the old but persistent African belief in sorcery and black magic. Thousands of children are victimised, abused, abandoned or even killed as they are blamed for having brought about disease, misfortune, death and famine by their alleged witchcraft. ''The Guardian'' is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in 1821 as ''The Manchester Guardian'', and changed its name in 1959. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. The Dying Rooms
''The Dying Rooms'' is a 1995 television documentary film about Chinese state orphanages. It was directed by Kate Blewett and Brian Woods and produced by Lauderdale Productions. It first aired on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and in 1996, was aired on Cinemax. A follow-up film, ''Return to the Dying Room''s, was released in 1996. In 1996, the film won a Peabody Award. It also won a News & Documentary Emmy Award. Synopsis In the film, Blewett and others travel to Mainland China to visit orphanages that housed children that were abandoned as a result of the "one-child policy". The filmmakers stated that unwanted female and disabled children were left to die of neglect, which would enable the child's parents to have another child. While filming, the crew used hidden cameras to collect footage and Blewett used a false name while visiting the orphanages.
