Russell Square, Perth
Russell Square in Perth, Western Australia is a large public space between Aberdeen Street and James Street in Northbridge. It was named after Lord John Russell. The eastern boundary is on Parker Street, which is the location of the Saints Constantine and Helene Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and the Hellenic Community Centre. Shenton Street is the western boundary of the square. Russell Square was created some time between 1838 and 1845; it appears on 1845 maps of Perth, but not on 1838 maps. It has also been known as the park of sighs ( it, Parco dei Sospiri) as it was the favoured meeting place of the Italian community of Little Italy. In the early 1990s it was reviewed in planning studies. In October 1994 Russell Square was upgraded, and thirty sculptures were designed and created by local artists Greg James and Drago Dadich. Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with a population of 2.1 million (80% of the state) living in Greater Perth in 2020. Perth is part of the South West Land Division of Western Australia, with most of the metropolitan area on the Swan Coastal Plain between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. Aberdeen Street is a street in the Perth suburbs of Perth and Northbridge that runs from a cul-de-sac west of Lord Street in the east to a cul-de-sac between Fitzgerald Street and the Mitchell Freeway in the west. It is the main east-west road in the centre of Northbridge. Northbridge, Western Australia
Northbridge is an inner city suburb of Perth, Western Australia, historically separated from Perth's central business district by the Fremantle and Joondalup railway lines. It is part of the City of Perth local government area. Location Located immediately north of the CBD, Northbridge is officially bounded by William Street, Roe Street, Newcastle Street and the Mitchell Freeway. The name Northbridge is often misapplied to areas and landmarks east of William Street and/or north of Newcastle Street, such as the Perth Cultural Centre, which are technically still part of the suburb of Perth. Lord John Russell
John Russell, 1st Earl Russell, (18 August 1792 – 28 May 1878), known by his courtesy title Lord John Russell before 1861, was a British Whig and Liberal statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1852 and again from 1865 to 1866. The third son of the 6th Duke of Bedford, Russell was educated at Westminster School and Edinburgh University before entering Parliament in 1813. In 1828 he took a leading role in the repeal of the Test Acts which discriminated against Catholics and Protestant dissenters. He was one of the principal architects of the Reform Act 1832, which was the first major reform of Parliament since the Restoration, and a significant early step on the road to democracy and away from rule by the aristocracy and landed gentry.
