Rusk, Texas
Rusk is a city and the county seat of Cherokee County in the U.S. state of Texas. At the 2020 United States census, it had a population of 5,285. History The town was established by an act of the Texas Legislature on April 11, 1846. It was named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. By 1850, Rusk reportedly had 355 residents. A post office was authorized on March 8, 1847. The city of Rusk is no longer dry; a beer and wine local option election passed on May 9, 2009. Gallatin, Texas
Gallatin is a city in Cherokee County, Texas, in the United States, with a 2020 U.S. census-tabulated population of 321. History The area was first settled in the late 1840s, but a community did not develop until 1902, when the Texas and New Orleans Railroad (T&NO) was built through the area. John W. Chandler and his sister, Sophronia, who owned the surrounding land, asked Rusk attorney C. H. Martin to survey a townsite. Chandler named the new town Gallatin, after his hometown of Gallatin, Tennessee (which in turn had been named for Albert Gallatin). The new community, located in a large truck-farming area, quickly developed into a market for tomatoes and other produce. The construction in 1907 of a branch line of the T&NO between Gallatin and Rusk further enhanced the town as a shipping center. Reklaw, Texas
Reklaw is a city in Cherokee and Rusk counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 379 at the 2010 census. History The town is named for Margaret Walker, who donated the land for the townsite, but since a Walker, Texas already existed elsewhere, the town simply spelled her name backwards. Similarly, the nearby town of Sacul was also named with a spelling reversal. Geography Reklaw is located at (31.861944, –94.984965). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.6 km), all of it land. Most of the city lies in Cherokee County, with only a small portion extending into Rusk County. The county seat is Rusk, which lies 130 miles southeast of Dallas and 160 miles north of Houston. The county was named for the Cherokee, who lived in the area before being expelled in 1839. Maydelle, Texas
Maydelle is a small unincorporated community in Cherokee County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 250 in 2000. It is located within the Tyler-Jacksonville combined statistical area. History The area in what is known as Maydelle today was first settled in the 1840s. It did not develop into a community until the Texas State Railroad built a track through the area in 1906. A nearby prison called Camp Wright housed convicts that were assigned to cut wood to make charcoal for a prison iron foundry in Rusk. C.D. Jarrarr, N.A. Slover and J.S. Sherman were given land grants surrounding the prison and built a new townsite there in 1910. They named it Maydelle for Maydelle Campbell, who was the daughter of former Texas governor Thomas Mitchell Campbell. She sang during the opening of the townsite. Rusk County is a county located in Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 52,214. Its county seat is Henderson. The county is named for Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a secretary of war of the Republic of Texas.
