Glowe is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is a state-recognised resort. Geography Glowe lies about 18 kilometres north of Bergen auf Rügen and is located at the western end of the boundary between the Jasmund peninsula and the narrow land bridge of Schaabe between the Baltic Sea (the bay of Tromper Wiek) and the lagoon of Großer Jasmunder Bodden. Municipal subdivisions The municipality consists of the villages: *Glowe *Baldereck *Kampe *Bobbin *Polchow *Ruschvitz *Spyker History Glowe was first documented in 1314. Carl Gustav Wrangel
''Fältmarskalk'' Carl Gustaf Wrangel (also Carl Gustav von Wrangel; 23 December 1613 – 5 July 1676) was a Swedish Statesman and Military Commander who commanded the Swedish forces in the Thirty Years', Torstenson, Bremen, Second Northern and Scanian Wars. A Baltic German, he held the ranks of a Field Marshal, Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish forces in Germany (1646–1648), and Lord High Admiral of Sweden (from 1657). Wrangel was Governor-General of Swedish Pomerania (1648–1652 and 1656–1676) and, from 1664, Lord High Constable of Sweden and a member of the Privy Council. He held the title of a Count of Salmis until 1665, when he became Count of Sölvesborg. German Maritime Search And Rescue Service
The German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (german: Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger - DGzRS, ; lit. ''German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons'') is responsible for Search and Rescue in German territorial waters in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, including the Exclusive Economic Zone. The headquarters and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the Society are located in Bremen. It was founded in Kiel on 29 May 1865. It owns 60 lifeboats at 55 stations which are operated by 185 employed crew members and 800 volunteers. The society has about 2000 engagements every year. Up to 2019, it rescued approximately 85,000 persons. In 2019 it saved 81 lives, rescued 270 persons from critical situations and carried out 373 medical transports. The ''DGzRS'' is entirely financed by membership fees, private donations and legacies. Dinosaur Land (Rügen)
Dinosaur Land on the German island of Rügen (german: Dinosaurierland Rügen) was opened by Rüdiger Kunkel on 30 April 2008 on land that had belonged to the East German National People's Army (NVA). The site covers an area of 9.5 hectares in the municipality of Glowe and is not far from the villages of Spycker and Bobbin on Lake Spycker. The focus of the park is its display of dinosaur models, each with an information board. In addition there are models of prehistoric fish, marine mammals and the odd turtles, hominids, mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers. The models are made of glass-reinforced plastics (GFP) and are made by hand. At the time of opening there were around 1000 of these models displayed on a roughly 800 metre long circular walk. Spyckerscher See And Mittelsee Nature Reserve
The Spyckerscher See and Mittelsee Nature Reserve (german: Naturschutzgebiet Spyckerscher See und Mittelsee) is a nature reserve in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It includes the two lakes named as well as the adjacent shore and shallow water areas, covering a total area of 344 hectares. It was designated as a reserve on 5 November 1990 and expanded in 1994. Neighbouring villages are Glowe in the northwest and Spyker in the east. Its conservation aim is the preservation of a very attractive section of the North Rügen Bodden, a lagoon landscape which is a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The reserve borders immediately on the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. The reserve is protected under EU law as part of the ''Nordrügensche Boddenlandschaft'' Special Area of Conservation and the ''Binnenbodden von Rügen'' Special Protection Area The reserve is in good condition thanks to the cessation of human activities. Spycker Castle
The Spyker Castle (german: Schloss Spy(c)ker) and estate lie on the territory of the municipality of Glowe in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Spycker Castle is the oldest profane structure on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. Spycker was first recorded in 1318. It belonged at that time to the Stralsund patrician family, the von Külpens. In 1344 a daughter from the House of von Külpen married the Jasmunds. As a result, the Spyker branch of the von Jasmunds was founded which died without issue in 1648. As a result of the Thirty Years' War, Pomerania, and hence Rügen, fell to Sweden under the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. As a reward for his wartime services, Queen Christine of Sweden gave the now empty seat of Spycker in 1649 to the Swedish field marshal and later governor-general of Swedish Pomerania, Carl Gustav Wrangel. Prestressed concrete is a form of concrete used in construction. It is substantially "prestressed" ( compressed) during production, in a manner that strengthens it against tensile forces which will exist when in service. Post-tensioned concreted is "structural concrete in which internal stresses have been introduced to reduce potential tensile stresses in the concrete resulting from loads."
