Rusa (genus)
''Rusa'' is a genus of deer from southern Asia. They have traditionally been included in '' Cervus'', and genetic evidence suggests this may be more appropriate than their present placement in a separate genus.Pitraa, Fickela, Meijaard, Groves (2004). ''Evolution and phylogeny of old world deer.'' Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 33: 880–895. Three of the four species have relatively small distributions in the Philippines and Indonesia, but the sambar is more widespread, ranging from India east and north to China and south to the Greater Sundas. All are threatened by habitat loss Habitat destruction (also termed habitat loss and habitat reduction) is the process by which a natural habitat becomes incapable of supporting its native species. The organisms that previously inhabited the site are displaced or dead, thereby ... and hunting in their native ranges, but three of the species have also been introduced elsewhere. Sambar (deer)
The sambar (''Rusa unicolor'') is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, local insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat. The name "sambar" is also sometimes used to refer to the Philippine deer called the "Philippine sambar", and the Javan rusa called the "Sunda sambar". Description The appearance and the size of the sambar vary widely across its range, which has led to considerable taxonomic confusion in the past; over 40 different scientific synonyms have been used for the species. In general, they attain a height of at the shoulder and may weigh as much as , though more typically .Burnie D and Wilson DE (Eds.), ''Animal: The Definitive Visual Guide to the World's Wildlife''. DK Adult (2005), Head and body length varies from , with a tail. Individuals belonging to western subspecies tend to be ...

Rusa Alfredi
The Visayan spotted deer (''Rusa alfredi''), also known as the Visayan deer, the Philippine spotted deer or Prince Alfred's deer, is a nocturnal and endangered species of deer located primarily in the rainforests of the Visayan islands of Panay and Negros though it once roamed other islands such as Cebu, Guimaras, Leyte, Masbate, and Samar. It is one of three endemic deer species in the Philippines, although it was not recognized as a separate species until 1983. An estimated 2,500 mature individuals survived worldwide as of 1996, according to the IUCN, although it is uncertain of how many of them still survive in the wild. The diet of the deer, which consists of a variety of different types of grasses, leaves, and buds within the forest, is the primary indicator of its habitat. Since 1991 the range of the species has severely decreased and is now almost co-extensive with that of the Visayan warty pig. In April 2009 an expedition team of British and Filipino mountaineers an ...

Javan Deer Stag - Baluran NP - East Java (30049870271)
Javan () was the fourth son of Noah's son Japheth according to the "Generations of Noah" (Book of Genesis, chapter 10) in the Hebrew Bible. Josephus states the traditional belief that this individual was the ancestor of the Greeks. Also serving as the Hebrew name for Greece or Greeks in general, יָוָן ''Yavan'' or ''Yāwān'' has long been considered cognate with the name of the eastern Greeks, the Ionians (Greek Ἴωνες ''Iōnes'', Homeric Greek Ἰάονες ''Iáones''; Mycenaean Greek *Ιαϝονες ''Iawones''). Giving that all Torah scrolls are strictly un punctuated reading the word יון can give ''Yon'', given as the letter Vaw may just as equally function as consonant (read "v") or vowel (read "o" or " ʊ"). The Greek race has been known by cognate names throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, Near East and beyond: see Sanskrit ''Yona'' & Sanskrit ( ''yavana'') or the proto- Aryan languages from which Sanskrit probably originated. In Greek mythology, the epo ...

Rusa Marianna
The Philippine deer (''Rusa marianna''), also known as the Philippine sambar or Philippine brown deer, is a vulnerable deer species endemic to the Philippines. It was first described from introduced populations in the Mariana Islands, hence the specific name. Taxonomy ''Cervus mariannus'' was the scientific name proposed by Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest in 1822. It was subordinated to the genus ''Rusa''. Four subspecies are currently recognized: * ''R. m. marianna'' in Luzon biogeographic region * ''R. m. barandana'' in Mindoro * ''R. m. nigella'' in isolated upland areas of Mindanao * ''R. m. nigricans'' in lowland sites of Mindanao Characteristics The Philippine brown deer is relatively smaller than its relative, the sambar deer. Its head-and-body length and shoulder height measures , and , respectively. Its weight usually ranges from 40 to 60 kg. Generally, its color is brown with white tail underside. Antlers are common among males which measures 20 to 40 c ...

Cervus Mariannus
''Cervus'' is a genus of deer that primarily are native to Eurasia, although one species occurs in northern Africa and another in North America. In addition to the species presently placed in this genus, it has included a whole range of other species now commonly placed in other genera. Additionally, the species-level taxonomy is in a state of flux. Taxonomy Genus Until the 1970s, ''Cervus'' also included the members of the genera ''Axis'', '' Dama'', and ''Elaphurus'', and until the late 1980s, it included members of ''Rucervus'' and '' Rusa''. Species In the third edition of ''Mammal Species of the World'' from 2005, only the red deer (''C. elaphus'') and sika deer (''C. nippon'') were recognized as species in the genus ''Cervus''. Genetic and morphological evidence suggest more species should be recognized. For example, the species ''Cervus canadensis'' (elk/wapiti) is considered a separate species. Red deer species group Within the red deer species group, some sources ha ...

Charles Hamilton Smith
Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith, KH, KW, FRS, FLS, (26 December 1776 in East Flanders, in the United Provinces of the Netherlands – 21 September 1859 in Plymouth) was an English artist, naturalist, antiquary, illustrator, soldier, and spy. Military service His military career began in 1787, when he studied at the Austrian academy for artillery and engineers at Mechelen and Leuven in Belgium. Although his military service, which ended in 1820 and included the Napoleonic Wars, had him travel extensively (including the West Indies, Canada, and United States), much of his time was spent at a desk job in Britain. One of his noteworthy achievements was an 1800 experiment to determine which colour should be used for military uniforms. The increasing accuracy of firearms, especially rifles, brought advantages to shades which offer a less distinctive target – by testing the accuracy of a rifle company against grey, green, and red targets, he showed scientifically t ...

Introduced Species
An introduced species, alien species, exotic species, adventive species, immigrant species, foreign species, non-indigenous species, or non-native species is a species living outside its native distributional range, but which has arrived there by human activity, directly or indirectly, and either deliberately or accidentally. Non-native species can have various effects on the local ecosystem. Introduced species that become established and spread beyond the place of introduction are considered naturalized. The process of human-caused introduction is distinguished from biological colonization, in which species spread to new areas through "natural" (non-human) means such as storms and rafting. The Latin expression neobiota captures the characteristic that these species are ''new'' biota to their environment in terms of established biological network (e.g. food web) relationships. Neobiota can further be divided into neozoa (also: neozoons, sing. neozoon, i.e. animals) and n ...
