Rupert Mearse Wells
Rupert Mearse Wells (November 28, 1835 – May 11, 1902) was speaker of the Legislature of Ontario in 1874 to 1879 and served as Liberal MLA for Bruce South from 1872 to 1882. He represented Bruce East in the House of Commons of Canada from 1883 to 1887 as a Liberal. He was born in Prescott County in Upper Canada in 1835 and attended the University of Toronto. He studied law, was called to the bar in 1857 and entered the practice of law in L'Orignal. He joined the law practice of Edward Blake in 1860 and left that firm to partner with Angus Morrison in 1870. He served as attorney for York County and the city of Toronto in 1872. He was elected to the provincial legislature in an 1872 by-election after Edward Blake resigned to retain his seat in the federal parliament. Bruce East
Bruce East was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1882 to 1904. This riding was created in 1882 from parts of Bruce North and Bruce South ridings. The East Riding of the county of Bruce consisted of the townships of Culross, Greenock, Brant and Carrick, the town of Walkerton, and the village of Teeswater. The electoral district was abolished in 1903 when it was redistributed between Bruce North and Bruce South ridings. L'Orignal, Ontario
L'Orignal () is a Franco-Ontarian village and former municipality, now part of Champlain Township in eastern Ontario, Canada. Its population in 2016 was 1,450. L'Orignal likely took its name from its location on the Ottawa River once known as Pointe à l'Orignac ( French for "Moose Point"), where moose crossed the river. It was one of the seigneuries of New France. History In 1674, the Company of New France granted the Seigneurie de L'Orignac (later renamed the Seigneurie de Longueuil) to François Prévost. It was one of the two seigneuries the King of France granted in present-day Ontario, along with La Salle's Seigneurie de Cataraqui (now Kingston). In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. York County is a historic county in Upper Canada, Canada West, and the Canadian province of Ontario. It was organized by the Upper Canada administration from the lands of the Toronto Purchase and others. Angus Morrison (politician)
Angus Morrison, (January 20, 1822 – June 10, 1882) was a Canadian lawyer and political figure in Ontario. He represented Niagara in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member from 1867 to 1874. He served as the 21st Mayor of Toronto from 1876 to 1878. He was also a member of the Orange Order in Canada. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1822 and came to Upper Canada with his father in 1830; they later moved to York (Toronto). Morrison joined the law office of his older brother, Joseph, as a clerk in 1839, was called to the bar in 1845 and opened his own practice in Toronto. He was elected to city council in 1853 and 1854. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in the North riding of Simcoe in 1854; he was reelected in 1857 and 1861.
