Runnymede Farm
Runnymede Farm is an American horse breeding farm located outside Paris, Kentucky on U.S. Route 27, the Paris-Cynthiana Road. It is said to be the longest continuously running Thoroughbred horse farm in Kentucky, established in 1867 by American Civil War Colonel Ezekiel Field Clay. Colonel Ezekiel Clay (1840–1920), whose father, Brutus J. Clay, was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives and a breeder of Thoroughbreds and champion cattle. He was a nephew of abolitionist Cassius Clay and a cousin to Henry Clay. Ezekiel Clay & Catesby Woodford breeding partnership In the early part of the 1870s Ezekiel Clay formed what became a successful partnership with Catesby Woodford (d. age 74 in 1923) who owned the neighbouring Raceland Farm. Horse breeding is reproduction in horses, and particularly the human-directed process of selective breeding of animals, particularly purebred horses of a given breed. Planned matings can be used to produce specifically desired characteristics in domesticated horses. Furthermore, modern breeding management and technologies can increase the rate of conception, a healthy pregnancy, and successful foaling. Terminology The male parent of a horse, a stallion, is commonly known as the ''sire'' and the female parent, the mare, is called the ''dam''. Maker's Mark Mile Stakes
The Maker's Mark Mile Stakes is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for horses age four years old and older over a distance of one mile on the turf held annually in early April at Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, Kentucky during the spring meeting. History The event was inaugurated as the Fort Harrod Stakes on 13 April 1989 and was run over distance of about miles the won by the seven year old Yankee Affair who set a course record in winning the event in a time of 1:43. The following year the event was decreased to the current distance of one mile. The Fort Harrod Stakes was named after the fort which was named after James Harrod, who led an early party of settlers into Kentucky in the 1770s. Breeders' Futurity Stakes
The Breeders' Futurity Stakes is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race held annually in early October at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky. Currently offering a purse of $500,000, the race is open to two-year-old horses and is run at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. From 1997 to 2008, the race was sponsored by Lane's End Farm. From 2009 to 2013 it was sponsored by Dixiana Farm. It is now sponsored by Claiborne Farm. Structure The race is a Road to the Kentucky Derby Prep Season qualifying race. The winner receives 10 points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby. Tejano Run
Tejano Run (May 5, 1992 – 2011) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who came second in the 1995 Kentucky Derby to Thunder Gulch. Background Tejano Run was bred by Catesby Woodford Clay at his Runnymede Farm outside Paris, Kentucky. He was bought and raced by Roy and Joyce Monroe and was trained by Kenneth McPeek. Racing career As a two-year-old, Tejano Run won the Breeders' Futurity Stakes and Kentucky Cup Juvenile Stakes. As a three-year-old, he came second to Thunder Gulch in the 1995 Kentucky Derby. He then ran ninth to Timber Country in the Preakness Stakes. As a four and five-year-old, Tejano Run won on both the dirt and turf. Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989), also known as Big Red, was a champion American thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse who is the ninth winner of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing (United States), American Triple Crown, setting and still holding the fastest time record in all three races. He is regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Wood Memorial Stakes
The Wood Memorial Stakes is an American flat Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held annually in April at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, Queens, New York. It is run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on dirt. The Wood Memorial has been run as a Grade II event since 2017. It was a Grade I race from 1974 (when grading was first introduced) to 1994 and again from 2002 to 2016. The Wood Memorial is one of the major prep races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Angle Light (April 18, 1970 – unknown) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who defeated the champion Secretariat in the 1973 Wood Memorial Stakes. Background Angle Light was bred by Howard B. Noonan and Runnymede Farm and was purchased and raced by Edwin Whittaker. He was sired by 1964 Belmont Stakes winner Quadrangle, out of the mare Pilot Light. Count Turf
Count Turf (April 27, 1948 – October 18, 1966) was a champion American Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse who won the 1951 Kentucky Derby. His grandsire Reigh Count won the 1928 Kentucky Derby and his sire Count Fleet won the 1943 Kentucky Derby and went on to win the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, Triple Crown. The only other father/son/grandson combination to win the Kentucky Derby was Pensive, Ponder (horse), Ponder, and Needles (horse), Needles. Agile (1902–after 1914) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1905 Kentucky Derby. Background Agile was sired by Sir Dixon, a very good runner whose wins included the Belmont, Travers and Withers Stakes and who was the Leading sire in North America in 1901. In addition to Agile, Sir Dixon was also the sire of Champions Running Water and Blue Girl as well as the multiple top level stakes winner and track record breaker, Blues. Racing career Ridden by Jack Martin, Agile won the 1905 Kentucky Derby against two other competitors, Ram's Horn and Layson. It was one of the smallest fields since Azra won in 1892. Ben Brush
Ben Brush (1893–1918) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1896 Kentucky Derby. Walter Vosburgh, for whom the Vosburgh Stakes is named, said Bramble was "a breed as tough as pine nuts." On May 6, 1896, Bramble and Roseville's son Ben Brush was the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby at its modern distance of 1¼ miles. (Since its inception in 1875, the Derby had been staged over 1½ miles, the length of the original Derby at Epsom Downs in England.) It was the 22nd running of the Derby and the first to drape a blanket of white and pink roses over the shoulders of the victor.
