Rumba Catalana
The Catalan rumba ( ca, rumba catalana, ) is a genre of music that developed in Barcelona's Romani community beginning in the 1950s and 1960s. Its rhythms are derived from the Andalusian flamenco rumba, with influences from Cuban music and rock and roll. The Catalan rumba originated in the Romani communities in the Gràcia, ''carrer (street) de la Cera del Raval'' and Hostafrancs neighborhoods. The Romani community in those neighborhoods is long-established and bilingual in Catalan and were influenced by the heavy Andalusian immigration to Barcelona during this period. The genre is based in a fusion of Catalan-Andalusian flamenco singing and the Afro-Cuban claves. It is in time, and consists of vocalists and handclaps, accompanied by guitar, bongos, and güiro; later groups also incorporate timbales, conga drums, small percussion instruments, piano, wind instruments, electric bass, and electric keyboard. It is to be distinguished from '' musical form'' and musical style, although in practice these terms are sometimes used interchangeably. A wind instrument is a musical instrument that contains some type of resonator (usually a tube) in which a column of air is set into vibration by the player blowing into (or over) a mouthpiece set at or near the end of the resonator. Sabor De Gràcia
Sabor de Gràcia (taste or flavour of Gràcia) is a Catalan rumba band from Barcelona, Spain. The group was created in 1994 under the leadership of Antoni Carbonell, ''Sicus''. They published their first album in 1997. ''Tots els colors'' (all the colours) includes both inedit songs and covers of some Catalan classic artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat. In 2015 they published a new album to celebrate 20 years of history: Gitanos Catalans (Catalan Gypsies). They have been involved in some events and projects promoting Catalan independence. In 2018 they published an album to pay homage to Peret: ''Sabor a Peret''. Like the Romani people from Northern Catalonia, Sabor de Gràcia sing predominantly in Catalan. Gipsy Kings
Gipsy Kings are a group of flamenco, salsa, and pop musicians from Arles and Montpellier in southern France, who perform mostly in Catalan but also mix in Spanish with southern French dialects. Although the group members were born in France, their parents were mostly ''gitanos'', Spanish Romani who fled Spain during the 1930s Spanish Civil War. Gato Pérez
Xavier Patricio Pérez Álvarez (April 11, 1951 – October 18, 1990), known as Gato Pérez, was a musician of Argentine origin who settled in Catalonia. He stood out in the musical genre of the Catalan rumba, which he merged with salsa and an original style. He was a singer, composer and bass guitarist. Biography Although he was born in Buenos Aires, he came from Spanish families who had emigrated after the civil war. His paternal grandparents were from Asturias and La Rioja; and his maternal grandparents were from León and Burgos. In Madrid his paternal grandfather owned a fleet of cabs for the diplomatic corps. At the beginning of the war, he fled to Barcelona, where he worked in an aeronautical factory run by Russians and went to the refugee camps in the south of France. Peret
Pedro Pubill Calaf ( ; 24 March 1935 – 27 August 2014), better known as Peret, was a Spanish Romani singer, guitar player and composer of Catalan rumba from Mataró (Barcelona). Known for his 1971 single, "Borriquito" (Ariola Records), Peret represented Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 with the song " Canta y sé feliz" and performed during the closing ceremony at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 2001, Peret recorded and released ''Rey De La Rumba'' (''King of the Rumba'') an album of updated versions of his older songs with guest musicians including Jarabe de Palo, El Gran Silencio, David Byrne of the Talking Heads, and more.
