Rulo Bridge
The Rulo Bridge is the name for whatever bridge crosses Missouri River on U.S. Route 159 (US 159) from the village of Rulo in Richardson County, Nebraska, to Holt County, Missouri, west of Big Lake. 1939 Bridge The old Rulo bridge was a truss bridge built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration and Kansas City Bridge Company and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. It was featured in the movie '' Paper Moon''. (includes 1 photograph) In March 2009, Nebraska Department of Roads approved a plan for a new bridge, which would be south of the current bridge. The current Rulo Bridge would then be dismantled. 2013 Bridge The new Rulo bridge opened in 2013, and the historic bridge was imploded on January 19, 2014. Rulo, Nebraska
Rulo is a village in Richardson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 144 at the 2020 census. History Rulo was laid out in 1857. It was named for Charlie Rouleau, the original owner of the town site. In 1933, the foundation for the Rulo Bridge, a toll bridge across the Missouri River, was laid. The owner of the bridge was originally John Mullen from Falls City, together with a group of investors, the "Kansas City Bridge Company". Construction of the bridge began in 1938, after the Works Progress Administration decided to finance half the cost. The bridge was finished in 1939. During the early 1980s, a small group of Christian Identity survivalists, led by Michael W. Ryan, began living in a religious cult located on a farm two miles north of Rulo, along the Missouri River. U.S. Route 36 (US 36) is an east–west United States highway that travels approximately from Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado to Uhrichsville, Ohio. The highway's western terminus is at Deer Ridge Junction, an intersection in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, where it meets US 34. Its eastern terminus is at US 250 in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Pony Express Bridge
The Pony Express Bridge is a highway girder bridge over the Missouri River connecting Elwood, Kansas with St. Joseph, Missouri on U.S. Route 36 (US 36). The bridge is referred to in signage as Pony Express Bridges because there are separate bridges for east and west bound traffic. The bridges were built in 1983 to replace a truss bridge built in 1929. The truss bridge was demolished in March 1984. The bridge is near the Pony Express stables at its eastern terminus in St. Joseph. US 36 to Marysville, Kansas is designated the ''Pony Express Memorial Highway'' because it follows the route. The bridge also passes over the family property of Johnny Fry, the "official" first west-bound rider of the Pony Express. Rulo Rail Bridge
The Rulo Rail Bridge is a truss bridge across the Missouri River connecting Rulo, Nebraska, with Holt County, Missouri, and is used by the BNSF Railway to transport coal from Wyoming and Colorado to Midwest power plants. The original bridge was built in 1887. It was fabricated in England and reassembled at Rulo. In the summer of 1977 the steel truss was replaced in 48 hours when sections of the new bridge were assembled on either side of the river, then lifted onto falsework towers on barges on both sides of the up and downstream sides. The new bridge was placed on the upstream towers and the old bridge was moved to the downstream side and then new bridge was placed on the original 1887 piers. The total cost of the operation was $6.7 million. Prior to the replacement only grain rather than coal trains could cross the bridge. U.S. Highway 159 (US 159) is a auxiliary route of US 59. It travels from Nortonville, Kansas at US 59 to New Point, Missouri, also at US 59. The highway permits through traffic on US 59 to bypass the cities of Atchison, Kansas and Saint Joseph, Missouri, traveling instead through Falls City, Nebraska and Hiawatha, Kansas (assuming the bridge over the Missouri River is open).
