Sir Samuel Brise Ruggles-Brise (29 December 1825 – 28 May 1899) was a British Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician, and owner of Spains Hall, Essex. Early life Samuel Ruggles-Brise was the eldest son of John Ruggles (1782–1852) of Spains Hall, who adopted the additional surname of Brise, and Catherine (died 1877), daughter of John Haynes Harrison, Lord of the Manor of Copford, and sister of Fiske Goodeve Fiske-Harrison, High Sheriff of Essex, who adopted the additional surname of Fiske. Sir Evelyn John Ruggles-Brise (6 December 1857 – 18 August 1935) was a British prison administrator and reformer, and founder of the Borstal system. Biography Ruggles-Brise was born in Finchingfield in Essex, the second son of Sir Samuel Brise Ruggles-Brise (1825–1899) and his wife, Marianne (''née'' Bowyer-Smijth), daughter of Sir William Bowyer-Smijth. He had three brothers and seven sisters. His family have deep roots in Essex, having been based at Spains Hall in Finchingfield since the house was bought by Samuel Ruggles, a clothier, in 1760. His father was Conservative MP for East Essex from 1868 to 1884. Another relation, Sir Edward Ruggles-Brise, 1st Baronet, was MP for Maldon from 1922 to his death in 1942 (with a short intermission in 1923-4), and became a baronet in George V's Silver Jubilee honours list in 1935. Colonel Sir John Archibald Ruggles-Brise, 2nd Baronet (13 June 1908 – 20 February 2007) was Lord Lieutenant of Essex from 1958 to 1978, and was the first pro-chancellor of Essex University from 1964 to 1979. He was also a president of the Country Landowners' Association (now the Country Land and Business Association) from 1957 to 1959, and was a co-founder of the CLA's annual Game Fair in 1958. Dorothea Ruggles-Brise
Lady Dorothea Louisa Ruggles-Brise (née Stewart-Murray; 25 March 1866 – 28 December 1937), was the daughter of the 7th Duke of Atholl. She was an expert about and a collector of Scottish traditional music. Life Lady Dorothea Louisa Stewart-Murray was born in 1866 to John Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl, and his wife, Louisa Moncrieff (daughter of Sir Thomas Moncreiffe, 7th Baronet). Her family had been the patrons of Niel Gow, the great Scottish fiddler, composer and music publisher, and she grew up with a lifelong interest in, and later became a great authority on, and collector of, Scottish traditional music. Even in her youth, she had started to compile a collection of little-known Scottish melodies, and would perform these herself. Captain Guy Edward Ruggles-Brise (15 June 1914 – 14 November 2000) was a British World War II, Second World War officer and High Sheriff of Essex He was born in 1914, the second son of Sir Edward Ruggles-Brise He came from a landed family who had lived at Spains Hall, Finchingfield, Essex, since the 18th century. The original house can be traced to the Domesday survey. He was schooled at Eton College like his elder brother John Ruggles-Brise and joined the 104th (Essex Yeomanry) Field Brigade RA. In 1940, he was sent for Commando training to Scotland, where he met his future wife Elizabeth Knox, and they married soon after. As a captain, he departed with No 7 Commando for North Africa, where he was captured during the raid on Bardia in 1941. He was handed over to the Italians and transferred to Naples by ship.
