Papua New Guinea is a tier three rugby union playing nation. They began playing international rugby union in 1965 and have yet to make the Rugby World Cup. Teams from Papua New Guinea have competed in the Commonwealth games. Although Papua New Guinea has a rugby union tradition, rugby league is far more popular and is the national sport. Despite this, there are 8520 registered players of rugby union and 57 clubs. The national side is ranked 83rd in the world (as of 27 June 2022). Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union
The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union, or Rugby PNG is the governing body for rugby union in Papua New Guinea. It was established in 1962 and was affiliated to the International Rugby Board in 1993. Rugby PNG is a full member of the Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU), which is the regional governing body for rugby in Oceania. National teams Papua New Guinea's national team, the Pukpuks, has not yet competed in a Rugby World Cup, but has won the FORU Oceania Cup Championship four times (as of November 2015). PNG fields teams in 7s competitions as well as 15s. The national women's 7s team was established in 2007, and won the Asia Pacific Women's Sevens Championships in 2011. Australia National Rugby Union Team
The Australia national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, is the representative national team in the sport of rugby union for the nation of Australia. The team first played at Sydney in 1899, winning their first test match against the touring British Isles team. Australia have competed in all nine Rugby World Cups, winning the final on two occasions and also finishing as runner-up twice. Australia beat England at Twickenham in the final of the 1991 Rugby World Cup and won again in 1999 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff when their opponents in the final were France. Papua New Guinea National Under-20 Rugby Union Team
The Papua New Guinea national under-20 rugby union team is for Papua New Guinean rugby union players aged 20 or under on January 1 of the year during which they are selected. The team has played at the World Rugby U20 Trophy and also competes at the Oceania U20 Championship as of 2015. Under 20 age grade rugby came into existence, as a result of the IRB combining the Under 19 Rugby World Championship and Under 21 Rugby World Championship into a single IRB Junior World Championship tournament. 2009 Junior World Trophy In April 2009, Kenya hosted the 2009 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy. Papua New Guinea National Rugby Sevens Team
The Papua New Guinea national rugby sevens team competes in the Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, Challenger Series and the Oceania Sevens. They finished third in 2009 and fourth in 2010, 2015 and 2016 in the Oceania Sevens. The team has also entered selected World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments as an invited team. The team has been invited to the New Zealand Sevens in 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018, and to the Australian Sevens in 2000, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2017 and 2018. The team has also been invited at the 2000 Fiji Sevens and 2000 Tokyo Sevens . At the 2011 Gold Coast Sevens, PNG defeated Niue and Japan to take 13th place. Brendan Moon
Brendan Moon (born 10 October 1958) is an Australian former rugby union wing who played for the Queensland Reds in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Moon played 100 games for Queensland and also played in the premiership winning Brothers Old Boys team of 1978, 1980–1983, Brendan also represented Australia in 35 tests and was considered one of the best finishing wingers in the game with excellent positional play and terrific acceleration.
