Rugby union in Cyprus is a minor but growing sport. Governing body The governing body is the Cyprus Rugby Federation It became affiliated to FIRA in 2006. History Cypriot rugby goes back to at least the 1950s, when it was played by British Armed Forces there. The British military still contributes teams from the Akrotiri and Dhekelia bases. Slovakia National Rugby Union Team
The Slovakia national rugby union team has yet to qualify for a Rugby World Cup. They are currently affiliated to FIRA-AER, but not yet to World Rugby. History Slovakia played their first match in 2006 against the Principality of Monaco and lost 0-6. However, the points went to them after it was discovered that Monaco had used ineligible players. In 2009, they withdrew from European competition for financial reasons, after having been unable to secure sponsorship. However, they returned to European competition in 2010, playing in the 2010–12 European Nations Cup Third Division. The new dynamic has been supported by the city of Bratislava and the Government of Slovakia. Limassol Crusaders
The Limassol Crusaders are an independent rugby union club based in Limassol, Cyprus. They were the 2nd independent rugby club to be formed in Cyprus, after the Paphos Tigers. They were established in late 2003. History The club was formed, and initial membership recruited, by word of mouth after the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Temporary training facilities were used initially, including a spell at the Elias Beach Resort Hotel, until the club finally leased the AEK Achileas Stadium in 2004, with the club joining the Joint Services Rugby Football Union and competing formally starting with the 2004/05 season. When the Cyprus Rugby Federation formed its own league, Limassol Crusaders joined it. When, in 2006, Cyprus formed a national squad, five Crusaders were members of the team that won their inaugural game against Greece. The Cyprus national rugby sevens team competes in the FIRA-AER European sevens. They have only played for 2 seasons. In their first season of the 2008 competition they managed to compete with the First and Third Tier sevens teams by defeating Georgia 7-5 and drawing 7–7 with Italy. The Bosnia and Herzegovina national rugby union team has yet to make its debut at the Rugby World Cup. Bosnia and Herzegovina have been playing international rugby since the early 1990s. The national side is ranked 73rd in the world (as of 29 July 2019). History Bosnia and Herzegovina made their international debut in November 1992 in a match against Croatia, losing 3 points to 47. Monaco national rugby union team has been playing since the 1990s. They currently only play friendly games and do not compete in the European Nations Cup, but they are still member of World Rugby. In October 2019, Monaco ranked 101st out of 105 national teams according to World Rugby. History Monaco made their international debut in July 1996, in a match against Luxembourg, which ended in an 8-all draw. The next match played by Monaco was in April of the following year, when they also recorded their first win, defeating Slovenia 23-17. Paphos ( el, Πάφος ; tr, Baf) is a coastal city in southwest Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District. The Greece national rugby union team represents one of the world's newest rugby union playing nations. The national team is governed by the HHF (Hellenic Handball Federation). Greece has been participating in international competitions since October 2005 playing its first international game against Austria in Vienna. Since then, they have played several international games in FIRA competition 3D, and in Greece. The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. The tournament was first held in 1987 and was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Four countries have won the trophy; New Zealand and South Africa three times, Australia twice, and England once.
