Rugby Americas North, abbreviated as RAN, is the governing body for rugby union in the North American continental region. Rugby Americas North operates under the authority of World Rugby, and is one of six regional unions represented within it. Prior to 2016, the organisation was known as NACRA – the North America Caribbean Rugby Association. The preceding body before 2010 was NAWIRA – the North America and West Indies Rugby Association. The main objective of RAN is the promotion and development of rugby in North America and the Caribbean. The Rugby Americas North Sevens is the rugby sevens competition for the confederation of North American and Caribbean rugby. It periodically serves as the regional qualifying competition for the World Cup Sevens and the Rugby sevens at the Olympics. In the early years of the competition the tier two teams from North America (Canada, United States) did not always participate or only sent representative sides outside of tournaments for World Cup qualification (2012) or Olympic qualification ( 2015). The Americas Rugby Championship, often informally called the Americas' Six Nations, was an annual international rugby tournament between six North and South American nations: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, the United States and Uruguay. Originally competed by various interlocking combinations of club, second-tier national and top national sides, the current (since 2016) international tournament has the top national sides competing (though Argentina, to date, sends its second-tier team). The RAN Women's Rugby Championship is the regional championship for women's international rugby union in North America and the Caribbean that is sanctioned by Rugby Americas North, RAN.
