Rufus Smith (actor)
Rufus Smith ( MD) (November 19, 1766 – November 15, 1844) was a physician and politician in the British colonial Province of New Brunswick, Canada. Born in Stamford in the Colony of Connecticut, after the American Revolutionary War his Loyalist family emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada, settling in a rural area on the west bank of the Missaguash River near the present-day town of Sackville. Trained in medicine, Dr. Rufus Smith had a large practice, serving the residents across the Isthmus of Chignecto. In 1789, he married Elizabeth Dixon (1770–1859) of Sackville. They had five daughters and two sons. In 1817, he was elected to the 6th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly as a representative for the County of Westmorland. He was the representative again in the 7th and 8th Assemblies, serving until 1827, then again in the 10th Assembly from 1831 to 1834. United Empire Loyalists (or simply Loyalists) is an honorific title which was first given by the 1st Lord Dorchester, the Governor of Quebec, and Governor General of The Canadas, to American Loyalists who resettled in British North America during or after the American Revolution. At the time, the demonym ''Canadian'' or ''Canadien'' was used to refer to the indigenous First Nations groups and the descendants of New France settlers inhabiting the Province of Quebec. Richibucto is a town in Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada. Geography The town is situated on the Richibucto River where it discharges into the Northumberland Strait. History Richibucto had been the location of an annual Mi'kmaq summer coastal community prior to British colonisation. Point de Bute is an unincorporated community in Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada. The local service district of Pointe de Bute takes its name from the community but uses a different spelling. History The Acadian Pierre Buhot settled here in the late 1600s, and the original name was Pont à Buhot which evolved, via Pont à Buot to the current name.
