Ruby Records
Ruby Records is an American record label, founded predominantly as a rock music label subsidiary of Slash Records. The original version of the label released seven albums in 1981 and 1982. Ruby was distributed through the same independent distributors that handled its corporate parent, Slash. When Warner Bros. Records bought Slash, they took over distribution of Ruby's three most popular albums (The Gun Club's ''Fire of Love'', The Misfits' ''Walk Among Us'', The Dream Syndicate's ''The Days of Wine and Roses'') and deleted the others (which included releases by the Flesh Eaters, Blurt and Lydia Lunch). The WB-distributed version of ''Fire of Love'' has an altered cover design, but the CD reissues on Slash and Rhino use the original artwork. Ruby was founded by the Flesh Eaters singer Chris D. Slash Records
Slash Records was an American record label originally specializing in local punk rock bands, active from 1978 to 2000. It was notable as one of the first and most successful independent record labels in alternative rock, alternative music, before its eventual acquisition by Warner Music Group. History The label was formed in 1978 by Bob Biggs. Biggs, a painter, initiated the label with a Lexicon Devil, seven-inch single from the Germs (band), Germs in 1978. A full album from that band was released the next year, and X (American band), X's ''Los Angeles (X album), Los Angeles'' followed in 1980. The label was distributed through Jem until 1981 when that company went bankrupt. Slash then entered into a distribution deal with Warner Bros., a move that was among the first collaborations between a self-started indie and a major label. Blurt
Blurt is an English post-punk band, founded in 1979 in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Background Blurt was founded in 1979 in Stroud, Gloucestershire by poet, saxophonist and puppeteer Ted Milton along with Milton's brother Jake, formerly of psychedelic group Quintessence, on drums and Peter Creese on guitar. After three albums Creese left the band to be replaced by Herman Martin on synthesizers who, after a year of constant touring left the band, and was replaced by Steve Eagles, former member of Satan's Rats, The Photos and Bang Bang Machine. Shortly thereafter Jake Milton left to be replaced by Nic Murcott, who was subsequently replaced by Paul Wigens. Eagles was replaced by Chris Vine as guitarist from 1990 to 1994, and returned to the band following Vine's departure. Wigens was briefly replaced by Charles Hayward between May and October 2001 before returning to the band, before departing the band for good in 2005. Fred McDowell (January 12, 1904 – July 3, 1972), known by his stage name Mississippi Fred McDowell, was an American hill country blues singer and guitar player. Career McDowell was born in Rossville, Tennessee, United States. His parents were farmers, who both died while Fred was in his youth. He took up the guitar at the age of 14 and was soon playing for tips at dances around Rossville. Christian Death
Christian Death is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles County, California, in 1979 by Rozz Williams. With major line-up changes over the years, Christian Death has retained "a relentlessly confrontational stand against organized religion and conventional morality". Williams was eventually joined by guitarist Rikk Agnew of the band Adolescents, James McGearty on bass guitar and George Belanger on drums. This line-up was responsible for producing the band's best known work, their 1982 debut album ''Only Theatre of Pain'', which was highly influential in the development of the style of music known as deathrock, as well as on the American gothic scene which also produced bands such as Kommunity FK and 45 Grave. Prayers (duo)
Prayers is an American rock act founded in 2013 by Rafael Reyes. As the musical project Prayers, Reyes originally collaborated with former member, Tijuana-born synthesizer player, Dave Parley. Prayers began including other artists such as Travis Barker, and Kat Von D on Prayer' third album, "Young Gods." Prayers further expanded, collaborating with Christian Death, Pictureplane for The fifth album, "Chologoth - The Return Of Pluto" featured musicians Annie Hardy and Robert Harvey. Prayers is the first musician/artist to use the term Cholo goth to define this genre of music which lyrically explores the harsh realities of gang and street life over throbbing beats and swirling synthesizers. Field Trip (band)
Field Trip was a four-piece rock band from Pleasanton, California active in the 1980s and 1990s. The band's members included Jim Galbraith (guitar/songwriting) and his brother Tom (drums). Their songs were often played on college radio stations. Their third album, ''Ripe'', was released in 1991 on Slash Records and featured keyboards by Faith No More's Roddy Bottum. Critical reception In 1989, Jon Pareles wrote that "Field Trip sometimes sounds like other bands - among them the Meat Puppets, Camper van Beethoven and the Descendents - but its fervor, precision and tunefulness are striking." Two years later, he wrote that Field Trip "plays bright, driving songs with memorable guitar riffs". Sweet Baby (band)
Sweet Baby (originally known as Sweet Baby Jesus) was a pop punk band that originated from Berkeley, California, and was part of the 924 Gilman Street scene. They were signed to Ruby Records. Formed in 1986 by singer Dallas Denery and singer/guitarist Matt Buenrostro with Crispy Jim (later of The Saddlebacks) on bass and Frank Portman, Dr. Frank (the frontman of The Mr. T Experience) on drums. Frank and Crispy Jim did not appear on any Sweet Baby recordings, having been already replaced by Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Knapsack) and Richie Bucher (Jüke, Wynona Ryders), respectively. Aaron Elliott aka Aaron Cometbus also played drums for them on their 1989 US tour. They had two songs on the Maximum Rock and Roll compilation ''Turn it Around'' (1988), "She's from Salinas" and "Pathetic."
