''Shortland Street'' is a New Zealand television soap opera. It was first broadcast on 25 May 1992 and currently airs on television network TVNZ 2. The following is a list of characters that appeared on the show in 2016 by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by the shows executive producer Maxine Fleming. The 25th season of ''Shortland Street'' began airing on 19 January 2016 and concluded on 19 December 2016, and its 25th anniversary was in May 2017. Blue Nathan Bluebell "Blue" Nathan, played by Tash Keddy, made his first appearance on 10 March 2016. Keddy is the first transgender actor to play a transgender character on the show. Shortland Street producer Maxine Fleming said there were around 12 actors auditioning for the part. Keddy auditioned with no acting experience and had never seen ''Shortland Street''. ''Shortland Street'' is a New Zealand prime-time soap opera centring on the fictitious Shortland Street Hospital, first broadcast on TVNZ 2 on 25 May 1992. It is New Zealand's longest-running drama and soap opera, being broadcast continuously for over 7,500 episodes and 30 years, and is one of the most watched television programmes in New Zealand. The show was originally screened as five half-hour episodes each week and initially receiving mixed reviews on its premiere. After its launch, it dropped in ratings and would have been cancelled if TVNZ had not ordered a year's worth of episodes in advance. Curtis Maaka Hannah is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street''. Portrayed by Jayden Daniels since 2015, Curtis has appeared on the show in 2 stints in both regular and recurring appearances. Creation and casting In 2015 producers decided to expand the role of guest-character Jack Hannah (Reuben Milner) and introduce a family unit around him. The character of his older brother Curtis was created and recent drama school graduate Jayden Daniels was cast in the role. Pua Magasiva (10 August 1980 – 11 May 2019) was a New Zealand actor of Samoan descent, best known for his roles as Shane Clarke, the Red Ranger from ''Power Rangers Ninja Storm'', and Vinnie Kruse in the soap opera ''Shortland Street'', both co-starring with Sally Martin. He was also one of the co-hosts of radio station Flava. Biography Magasiva was born in Apia, Samoa, but raised in Wellington, New Zealand, since he was two years old. Vainu'u "Vinnie" Kruse-Miller (previously Kruse) is a fictional character from the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street'', played by Pua Magasiva. Vinnie first arrived on 25 November 2003, leaving the show on 23 February 2006. He made a return to the soap after a five-year gap on 16 August 2011. The role was created specially for Magasiva and Vinnie is known for his party-loving and easy-going ways. Michael Galvin (born 27 March 1967) is a New Zealand actor, singer and playwright, well known for his role as Chris Warner on the soap opera Shortland Street, a character he has played almost since the show's debut in 1992 until 1996 and again from 2000 to present, and remains as of 2020, the only original cast member.
