Ruanoho Whero
The spectacled triplefin (''Ruanoho whero'') is a triplefin in the genus ''Ruanoho''. It is commonly found around New Zealand from depths of a few metres to about 30 m, most common in reef areas of broken rock. Its length is between 4 and 8 cm and its head is flattened with large eyes surrounded by a dark band giving rise to its common name. The head and fins have a pattern of fine blue lines. Its large pectoral fins are used as props when resting on the bottom where it spends most of its time. In the breeding season in winter and spring the males become darker, with a blue/black head and black first dorsal fin, and dark bars on the body. The specific name is a Māori Māori or Maori can refer to: Relating to the Māori people * Māori people of New Zealand, or members of that group * Māori language, the language of the Māori people of New Zealand * Māori culture * Cook Islanders, the Māori people of the C ... word meaning "red", a reference to the diagonal reddish ...

Ruanoho Decemdigitatus
''Ruanoho decemgitatus'', the longfinned triplefin, is a species of fish in the family Tripterygiidae. It is endemic to New Zealand. It is marine fish that occurs in shallow water (maximum depth 10 m) on rocks and cobbles on silty reefs in semi-sheltered areas. It can grow to total length Fish measurement is the measuring of individual fish and various parts of their anatomies. These data are used in many areas of ichthyology, including taxonomy and fisheries biology. Overall length * Standard length (SL) is the length of a fish .... Triplefin Blennies
Threefin or triplefin blennies are blenniiforms, small percomorph marine fish of the family Tripterygiidae. Found in tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, the family contains about 150 species in 30 genera. The family name derives from the Greek ''tripteros'' meaning "with three wings". With an elongated, typical blenny form, threefin blennies differ from their relatives by having a dorsal fin separated into three parts (hence the name); the first two are spinous. The small, slender pelvic fins are located underneath the throat and possess a single spine; the large anal fin may have one or two spines. The pectoral fins are greatly enlarged, and the tail fin is rounded. The New Zealand topknot, ''Notoclinus fenestratus'', is the largest species at 20 cm in total length; most other species do not exceed 6 cm. Many threefin blennies are brightly coloured, often for reasons of camouflage; these species are popular in the aquarium hobby ...
