Roysyn
Roysyn (foaled 24 October 1992) is a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 1995. Roysyn gave trainer Roger James his second Derby win (his first being Tidal Light when in partnership with Jim Gibbs), and rider Vinny Colgan the first of his six Derby wins. Racing career After failing in his only start at two, Roysyn started off his three-year-old season with a win in a maiden at Avondale. He followed that up with a placing and another win in low-quality races before finishing only sixth in the Avondale Guineas, his last race before the Derby. He was a changed horse when the 1995 Derby came around, beating Clear Rose and favourite Interval to record a slight upset victory. But he proved it was no fluke result later in the season, winning the Wellington Stakes and then his second Group 1 race in the Trackside Sales Stakes against older horses. Roger James is a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He is notable for having trained five New Zealand Derby winners, which is more than any other trainer in New Zealand and for having won many Group One races in New Zealand and Australia. Bakharoff
Bakharoff (foaled 12 February 1983) was an American-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was the highest-rated European two-year-old of 1985 when he won the William Hill Futurity and the Chesham Stakes as well as finishing second in the Dewhurst Stakes. As a three-year-old he was overshadowed by his stable companion Dancing Brave, but he showed good form to win the Geoffrey Freer Stakes and finish third in both the Prix du Jockey Club and the Irish Derby. In all, he achieved four wins and seven places in a twelve race career which lasted from April 1985 until September 1986. He later stood as a breeding stallion in New Zealand with modest results. The New Zealand Derby is a set-weights Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, run over a distance of 2,400 metres (12 furlongs) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held on the first Saturday in March, as the opening day of Auckland Cup Week. The purse of the race in 2020 was $1 million. The Minstrel
The Minstrel (11 March 1974 – 3 September 1990) was a Canadian-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred in Ontario, he was sold as a yearling and exported to Europe, where he was campaigned in Ireland and the United Kingdom. As a two-year-old The Minstrel was unbeaten in three races, including the Dewhurst Stakes, but lost two of his first three starts in 1977. He was then moved up in distance and won his remaining three races: the Epsom Derby, the Irish Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. These performances led to The Minstrel becoming horse of the year in the UK and later being inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Tidal Light was a Thoroughbred racehorse who was the champion filly of her year and beat the colts in the 1987 New Zealand Derby. After finishing second in her debut, Tidal Light won ten of her next 13 races, including the Derby, Avondale Guineas, Waikato Guineas, Canterbury Guineas and a Group 1 victory in the Air New Zealand Stakes over older horses under weight-for-age conditions, beating the great Solveig. Auckland Cup
The Auckland Cup is an annual race held by the Auckland Racing Club (ARC). It is an Open Handicap for thoroughbred racehorses competed on the flat turf over 3200 metres (two miles) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. The race was formerly graded as a Group One (G1) event but as from 2022 is a Group 2. It was first contested in 1874. History The first meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was in May 1874. One of the events, run over a distance of miles, was named the Auckland Cup. This race was won by Mr. J Watt's three-year-old Batter.
