Handball at the Summer Olympics refers to two different sports. Field handball was introduced for men at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, but dropped after that. At the 1952 Olympics, field handball was a demonstration sport. (Indoor) handball was introduced for men at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Women's handball competition was introduced at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. The Spain women's national handball team is the national team of Spain. It is governed by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation and takes part in international handball competitions. Spain was the big surprise of the 2008 European Championship, making it to the final after beating Romania and Germany and getting a draw against Norway, all of which were expected to beat Spain. The Spain national handball team is governed by the Royal Spanish Handball Federation. Spain is one of the most successful handball teams in the world, having won two IHF World Men's Handball Championship, World Championships and being the reigning 2018 European Men's Handball Championship, European Champions. They are also the only team, besides Sweden, to have successfully defended a European Championship title, having won in 2018 and 2020. Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end.
