Royal Spanish Academy
The Royal Spanish Academy ( es, Real Academia Española, generally abbreviated as RAE) is Spain's official royal institution with a mission to ensure the stability of the Spanish language. It is based in Madrid, Spain, and is affiliated with national language academies in 22 other Hispanophone nations through the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language. The RAE's emblem is a fiery crucible, and its motto is ("It purifies, it fixes, and it dignifies"). The RAE dedicates itself to language planning by applying linguistic prescription aimed at promoting linguistic unity within and between various territories, to ensure a common standard. Francisco Rico Manrique
Francisco Rico Manrique (born 28 April 1942, Barcelona) is a Spanish philologist. He was a student of José Manuel Blecua and Martín de Riquer. He is a professor of Medieval Spanish Literature at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and, since 1987, a member of the Royal Spanish Academy as well as the Académia das Ciéncias de Lisboa, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the British Academy. Rico was elected to Seat p of the Real Academia Española on 13 March 1986, he took up his seat on 4 June 1987. He has edited many classics from the medieval period and the "Siglo de Oro", and has written numerous studies on medieval and renaissance literature. Pere Gimferrer
Pere Gimferrer (born 22 June 1945) is a Spanish poet, translator and novelist. He is twice winner of Spain's Premio Nacional de Poesía (National Poetry Prize). He was born in Barcelona in 1945. He writes both in Castilian and Catalan. In Castilian, he has written the poetry collections ''Arde el mar'' (1966, National Prize for Poetry), ''Amor en vilo'' (2006), ''Interludio azul'' (2006) and ''Tornado'' (2008). Rafael María Baralt
Rafael María Baralt y Pérez (3 July 1810 - 4 January 1860) was a Venezuelan diplomat and one of the country's most famed writers, philologists, and historians. He was the first Latin American to occupy a chair at the Real Academia Española. Born in Maracaibo on 3 July 1810, he suffered an untimely death in Madrid due to the stresses and aggravations suffered during services rendered to his beloved country of birth. Baralt was the son of Miguel Antonio Baralt, who helped build the Baralt Theater in Maracaibo, and Ana Francisca Pérez, who was Dominican. Spanish Alphabet
Spanish orthography is the orthography used in the Spanish language. The alphabet uses the Latin script. The spelling is fairly phonemic, especially in comparison to more opaque orthographies like English, having a relatively consistent mapping of graphemes to phonemes; in other words, the pronunciation of a given Spanish-language word can largely be predicted from its spelling and to a slightly lesser extent vice versa.
