The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA) is an association aiming to oversee pipe band competition, and to promote and encourage the development of pipe band culture worldwidepipe band competition, and to promote and encourage the development of pipe band culture throughout the world. It was founded in 1930. The RSPBA sets the rules and guidelines for pipe band contests in the United Kingdom, administers the events including coordinating adjudication, logistics, and evaluation, and holds Annual General Meetings to ensure that the rules and regulations are up to date. In addition, the RSPBA administers and coordinates the World Pipe Band Championships, held every August in Glasgow. In addition to "The World's", there are four other Major Contests - Scottish, British, European, and United Kingdom Championships. Midwest Pipe Band Association
The Midwest Pipe Band Association is an association of pipe bands in the Midwestern United States. Within its area of jurisdiction, the association includes over forty pipe bands, offers band, solo piping and drumming, and drum major competitions with sanctioned judges, and is responsible for overseeing seasonal competition among its member bands. Individual members of the MWPBA compete in solo piping or snare drumming competitions ranging from novice to professional grades, as novice, intermediate, or advanced tenor drummers, novice or advanced bass drummers, or as drum majors. MWPBA member bands range from grade two to grade five, and are eligible to compete at sanctioned Highland Games throughout the season. The Eastern United States Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA) is an association of pipe bands in the Eastern United States. Its function is to sanction band and solo piping, drumming, and drum major competitions in the East Coast. It is also responsible for ranking and regrading its members. History The EUSPBA was founded in 1964 in order to provide a uniform means of competition between pipe bands in the Midatlantic East Coast. Pipe Band
A pipe band is a musical ensemble consisting of Bagpipes, pipers and drummers. The term pipes and drums, used by military pipe bands is also common. The most common form of pipe band consists of a section of pipers playing the Great Highland bagpipe, a section of snare drummers (often referred to as 'side drummers'), several Scottish tenor drum, tenor drummers and usually one, though occasionally two, bass drummers. The tenor drummers and bass drummer are referred to collectively as the 'bass section' (or in North America as the 'midsection'), and the entire drum section is collectively known as the drum corps. The band follows the direction of the pipe major; when on parade the band may be led by a drum major, who directs the band with a mace. Standard instrumentation for a pipe band involves 6 to 25 pipers, 3 to 10 side drummers, 1 to 6 tenor drummers and 1 bass drummer.
