Royal Rivalry
The Royal Rivalry refers to the U.S. college rivalry games between the James Madison Dukes and the Old Dominion Monarchs of the Sun Belt Conference. It is an intra-conference match-up between two Div. I FBS public universities, James Madison University and Old Dominion University, in the state of Virginia. History Both schools began sports competitions in the early 1970's as former Division II in-state opponents. The competitions intensified when both schools competed as full members of the Colonial Athletic Association following ODU's move to the conference in 1991. This undeclared in-state rivalry would last just over 20 years before ODU relocated to Conference USA in 2014 to become a member of the FBS. JMU remained in the CAA but still competed with ODU in other sports outside of football. In 2022, both schools joined the Sun Belt Conference. Bridgeforth Stadium is a football stadium located on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The stadium is home to the James Madison Dukes football team. The playing surface is named Zane Showker Field. With a seating capacity of 24,877, Bridgeforth Stadium is currently the 12th largest stadium in the Sun Belt Conference. History Originally named Madison Stadium, it was built in 1975 and had a capacity of approximately 5,200. The stadium was originally designed as a multi-purpose facility, and hosted football, track and field, lacrosse, and field hockey events. Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament
The Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Colonial Athletic Association. Foreman Field
S.B. Ballard Stadium, formerly Foreman Field, is a 21,944-seat multi-purpose stadium on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. It opened in 1936 with a football game between the University of Virginia and the College of William & Mary's Norfolk Division, which is now Old Dominion University. It is currently the home of Old Dominion Monarchs football. History The stadium was built as the home of the first Old Dominion football program when the university was still known as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary. The stadium was home to the football program from 1936 until it was discontinued in 1941. After the demise of the football program, Foreman Field hosted a number of other events. 2022 Old Dominion Monarchs Football Team
The 2022 Old Dominion Monarchs football team represented Old Dominion University during the 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Monarchs played their home games at S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia. It was their first football season in the Sun Belt Conference, competing in the East Division. Previously a member of the Sun Belt until 1991, the University did not field a football team at that time, nor did the conference sponsor the sport. The team was coached by third-year head coach Ricky Rahne. Previous season The Monarchs finished the 2021 season 6–7, 5–3 in C-USA play to finish in third place in the East Division. 2022 James Madison Dukes Football Team
The 2022 James Madison Dukes football team represented James Madison University in the 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They were led by fourth-year head coach Curt Cignetti. The Dukes played their home games at Bridgeforth Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia as members of the East division of the Sun Belt Conference. The Dukes finished the season 8–3, 6–2 in Sun Belt play to finish in a tie for first place in the East division. The season marked the Dukes' first year in the Sun Belt and the first of a two-year transition period from the Football Championship Subdivision. They were not eligible for a bowl game due to the transition period. Oyster Bowl
The Oyster Bowl is a regular season college football game played annually in the Hampton Roads-area of Virginia. The game has featured match-ups between high school, NCAA Division III, and at present, NCAA Division I teams, at various points in its existence. It is sponsored by the Norfolk, Virginia-based Khedive Temple of the Shriners, with a portion of the revenue going to children's charity. The 2018 Oyster Bowl was the 69th edition of the game; ODU defeated VMI 77–14, in the final game at Foreman Field. During the first incarnation of the Oyster Bowl, it was held at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Virginia, and with one exception, featured NCAA major college teams. The inaugural Oyster Bowl was held in 1946 between two high schools, the local Granby Comets and the Clifton Mustangs of Clifton, New Jersey. 2022 NCAA Division I FBS Football Season
The 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season will be the 153rd season of college football in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at its highest level of competition, the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The regular season is scheduled to begin on August 27 and end on December 10. The postseason will begin on December 17, and, aside from any all-star games that are scheduled, end on January 9, 2023, with the College Football Playoff National Championship at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
