Royal Navy Ratings Rank Insignia
This is a list of Royal Navy ratings rank insignia. Insignia Royal Navy Royal Marines Trade (branch) badges Ratings in the Royal Navy include trade badges on the right sleeve to indicate a specific job. The information on the left arm is the individual's rate - e.g. a leading rate (commonly called a leading hand). One nickname is "Killick", for the Killick-anchor rate badge. Branch badges include stars and crowns above and below the branch logo, indicating an individual's qualification within their branch. One star indicates they have passed the required exam in order to be eligible to be selected for the Leading Rates course in their respective branch. Two stars indicates they have completed the Leading Rates course and are now eligible to study for the Petty Officers Qualifying Exam (PQE). Leading Rating
Leading rating (or leading rate) is the most senior of the junior rates in the Royal Navy. It is equal in status to corporal, as the Royal Navy is the "Senior Service" and oldest service. Leading rates are permitted entry to and full use of corporals' messes when visiting the other services' bases and are, while in uniform, permitted to use their hands if denied entry. The rate was introduced under the authority of Admiralty Circular No. 121 of 14 June 1853. Leading ratings are normally addressed as "Leading Hand" or using their branch title e.g. ''Leading Seaman'', ''Leading Regulator'' etc. The insignia worn by leading rates is a single fouled anchor on the left arm, when in dress uniform, No.2s or "Tropics". The left arm also, of the sailor's white front (before the introduction of short sleeved shirts for all rating) or overalls. Warrant Officer (United Kingdom)
A warrant officer (WO) in the British Armed Forces is a member of the highest group of non-commissioned ranks, holding the King's (or Queen's) warrant, which is signed by the Secretary of State for Defence. Warrant officers are not saluted, because they do not hold the King's Commission, but they are addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am" by subordinates. Commissioned officers may address warrant officers either by their appointment (e.g. QMSI, RSM or sergeant major) or as "Mister", "Mrs" or "Ms", and then their last name, e.g. "Mr Smith". Although often referred to along with non-commissioned officers (NCOs), they are not NCOs, but members of a separate group (traditional official terminology for the personnel of a unit is "the officers, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men"), although all have been promoted from NCO rank.
