Robert James Manion
Robert James Manion (November 19, 1881 – July 2, 1943) was a Canadian politician who led the Conservative Party of Canada from 1938 to 1940. Prior to his leadership of the party, he served in Prime Minister Arthur Meighen and R.B. Bennett's cabinets. A Liberal prior to World War I, Manion was elected to the House of Commons in 1917 as a member of the pro-conscription Unionist Party led by Prime Minister Robert Borden. After the war, he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament until his defeat in 1935. In 1938, Manion was elected leader of the Conservatives, which was shortly relabeled as National Government. Despite his pro-conscription stance in World War I, Manion campaigned against conscription in World War II in the 1940 federal election. Manion also ran on a platform of forming a wartime coalition national unity government. John Potestio
John Potestio (born 1939 in Grimaldi, Italy) immigrated to Canada in 1953. He is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, (B.A.) and Lakehead University (M.A.) and was a teacher of history in Thunder Bay until his retirement in 1996. Presently, he is a sessional lecturer in Italian culture and language at Lakehead University. He is the author of several books, including ''In Search of a Better Life: Emigration to Thunder Bay from a Small Town in Calabria'' (2000), ''The Memoirs of Giovanni Veltri'' (1987), and ''The History of Port Arthur'', The Italian Mutual Benefit Society of Port Arthur (1985). He is also co-edited ''The Italian Immigrant Experience'' (1988) and ''Thunder Bay People'' (1987) with Antonio Pucci. Great Lakes Paper
The Great Lakes Paper Company was the operator of the largest and most modern pulp and paper manufacturing facility in the world. The Company employed over 4,000 in Northern Ontario, starting in 1924 as a pulp mill at Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada). Great Lakes had a highly developed social network within the company, including a children's Christmas party held at a local arena, and an annual picnic held at a local park, as well as many sports teams and other social groups. The company's working environment was enhanced by cultural diversity. For example under the Government of Canada's immigration policy, the "Close Relatives Scheme" resulted in over 400 Ukrainian refugees being employed as workers after World War II.
