Roy Phillips (musician)
Roy Godfrey Phillips (born 5 May 1941, in Parkstone, Poole, Dorset) is a British musician. He was a member of The Soundtracks (a backing group of The Dowlands), The Saints and The Peddlers. Background Phillips is known as the voice and keyboard sound of well-known popular trio, The Peddlers which was formed in Manchester in 1964 . In later years, Phillips was so taken with New Zealand, he decided to settle there. He has lived there since 1981. he spent some time in Auckland but didn't want to settle there so he moved up north to Paihia and ran a café there for eight years. After that he moved to Queenstown. In 2002, he moved to Christchurch and married to his wife, Robyn. He is still performing and writing music. Parkstone
Parkstone is an area of Poole, Dorset. It is divided into 'Lower' and 'Upper' Parkstone. Upper Parkstone - "Up-on-'ill" as it used to be known in local parlance - is so-called because it is largely on higher ground slightly to the north of the lower-lying area of Lower Parkstone - "The Village" - which includes areas adjacent to Poole Harbour. Girlie was a hit for jazz/pop trio, The Peddlers in 1970. It was also a major hit for them in New Zealand. Background The song which was composed by Roy Phillips was released on CBS 4720 in January, 1970. It was backed with "P.S. I Love You Girlie". As a follow-up to their Top 10 hit "Birth", it didn't do as well and was a minor success. New Zealand was where the song would be a classic. Acid Jazz Records is a record label based in East London formed by Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller in 1987. The label is the namesake of the acid-jazz subgenre of jazz music for which it is most famously known for producing. Background The label's first signing was singer-songwriter Rob Gallagher's band, Galliano, which released the label's first single "Frederick Lies Still" in 1987, which features a sample of "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield. Linda Ann Fredericks (born 27 September 1950), better known as Linda Lewis, is an English vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. She is the eldest of six children, three of whom also had singing careers. She is best known for the singles " Rock-a-Doodle-Doo" (1973), "Sideway Shuffle" (1973) and her version of Betty Everett's " Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" (1975), and for albums such as ''Lark'' (1972), '' Not a Little Girl Anymore'' (1975), '' Woman Overboard'' (1977) and the later ''Second Nature'' (1995), which became successful in countries such as Japan. Dean Parrish (born Philip Anastasi, or Anastasia; December 30, 1942 – June 8, 2021) was an American singer from New York City, best known for the song, " I'm on My Way", which became noted for being the penultimate record that was played at the last Northern soul all-nighter at the Wigan Casino. Career Anastasi was born to Italian and Spanish parents and was raised in Little Italy, New York. He lived by the train lines in Brooklyn. Anastasi sang second tenor in a street corner doo-wop group and attended the School of Industrial Arts. He was spotted by the same manager who looked after The Mystics and The Passions who tried to convince Anastasi to go from second tenor to lead/solo singer. The Peppermint Lounge was New York's premier nightclub in the very early 1960s. Anastasi frequented the establishment and would eventually appear on the bill. Clem Curtis (born Curtis Clements; 28 November 1940 – 27 March 2017) was a Trinidadian British singer, who was the original lead vocalist of sixties soul group The Foundations. Background Family He was the father of seven children, six sons and a daughter from previous relationships. Early years Born in Trinidad as Curtis Clements, he arrived in England at the age of fifteen and later found employment as an interior decorator. He entered boxing and won most of his fights as a professional boxer. His mother was a popular singer in Trinidad and Curtis claims that this contributed to his ear for music. Glenn Tilbrook
Glenn Martin Tilbrook (born 31 August 1957) is the lead singer and guitarist of the English band Squeeze, a band formed in the mid-1970s who broke through in the new wave era at the decade's end. He generally wrote the music for Squeeze's songs, while his writing partner, Chris Difford, wrote the lyrics. In addition to his songwriting skills, Tilbrook is respected both as a singer and an accomplished guitarist. He was born in Woolwich, London. Squeeze Tilbrook formed Squeeze with fellow guitarist and vocalist Chris Difford in the mid-1970s. Difford had placed an advertisement at a local shop looking for a guitarist and Tilbrook was the only person to respond. ''Close Up'' is a half-hour-long New Zealand current affairs programme produced by Television New Zealand. The programme aired at 7 pm weeknights (straight after '' One News'') on TV ONE and was presented in its final years by Mark Sainsbury. The last edition was broadcast on 30 November 2012. '' Seven Sharp'', a current affairs show aimed at a younger audience, took its place in 2013. AudioCulture is a New Zealand On Air funded online project billed as the "''Noisy Library of New Zealand Music''". Working with artists, historians and music industry people, the website tells the story of nearly 100 years of New Zealand popular music culture, from the first local recordings in the 1920s to digital streaming. The website launched on 31 May 2013, with 250 published pages and since then has been growing steadily with new pages and stories added regularly. Organisation The site was conceived and founded by New Zealand music industry historian and pioneer Simon Grigg. Grigg first conceived an online database of New Zealand music in the late 2000s and spent much of the next few years seeking funding and gathering support from the music industry in New Zealand.
