Roy Bell (ornithologist)
Raoul Sunday (Roy) Bell (19 February 1882 – 28 March 1966) was a professional New Zealand and Australian natural history specimen collector, ornithologist, naturalist and photographer, who spent much time on Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. Bell was born on Raoul Island in the Kermadec Group north-east of New Zealand. By 1908 he was working as a specimen collector. From 1912 to 1914 Bell worked for Gregory Mathews, collecting bird specimens for him on Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. The white-bellied storm petrel (''Fregetta grallaria'') is a species of seabird in the family Oceanitidae. It is found in Angola, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, French Polynesia, French Southern Territories, Maldives, Namibia, New Zealand, Perú, Saint Helena, and South Africa. Its natural habitat is open seas. Taxonomy The white-bellied storm petrel was formally described in 1818 by the French ornithologist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot. He used the French name "Le pétrel échasse" and coined the binomial name ''Procellaria grallaria''. The white-bellied storm petrel is now placed in the genus ''Fregetta'' that was introduced in 1855 by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte. The specific epithet ''grallaria'' is from Modern Latin ''grallarius'' meaning "stilt-walker". Mount Gower
Mount Gower (also known as Big Hill), is the highest mountain on Australia's subtropical Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. With a height of above sea level, and a relatively flat summit plateau, it stands at the southern end of Lord Howe, just south of the island's second highest peak, the high Mount Lidgbird, from which it is separated by the saddle at the head of Erskine Valley. Ascending Gower entails a popular, guided, strenuous 8-hour return hike, though no special climbing skills are needed. The mountain is covered with rainforest, including cloud forest at the summit, containing many of the island's endemic plants. Kermadec Petrel
The Kermadec petrel (''Pterodroma neglecta'') is a species of gadfly petrel in the family Procellariidae. It is 38 cm long with a wingspan of 100 cm. It is polymorphic, with light, dark and intermediate morphs known. It eats squid, fish and other marine creatures. Distribution It breeds in the Pacific ocean from Lord Howe Island to the Juan Fernández Islands. Rarely is the Kermadec petrel recorded west of Lord Howe Island, where it maintains a small colony of less than 100 individuals on Balls Pyramid. In the past it also bred in some numbers on the main islands, however, this is seen as unlikely today. Not much is known of the bird's breeding pattern at Balls Pyramid, however, it usually nests there in late summer. This coincides with the breeding patterns of other birds in the Kermadec Islands.
