Rowland Anderson
Rowland Joseph Anderson (30 September 1872 – 29 August 1959) was an Australian politician. He was born in Kurrajong to farmer William James Anderson and Sarah Roberts. He attended public school at Parramatta but left at sixteen to work as a tanner at Smithfield. On 16 September 1896 he married Minnie Maud Critchley; they had four children. In 1896 he established his own tannery business in Botany, and in 1904 was elected a local alderman. Also in 1904, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Botany. He did not re-contest in 1907. From 1929 to 1931 he was federal president of the Master Tanners Association; he was also deputy chair of the federal Hide and Leather Industries Board during both world wars. Smithfield is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Smithfield is located west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government areas of the City of Fairfield and Cumberland Council. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Liberal Reform Party (Australia)
The Liberal Reform Party was an Australian political party, active in New South Wales state politics between 1901 and 1916. It drew much of its support from Protestant and Temperance groups. History The question of tariff policy which, had created and divided the Free Trade Party and Protectionist Party in New South Wales in the 1890s, became a federal issue at the time of federation. Deprived of their main ideological difference, the two parties were recreated as the Liberal Reform Party, aligned with the federal Free Trade Party, and the Progressive Party, aligned with the federal Protectionist Party. The Progressive Party's vote collapsed at the 1904 election and many of its members then joined the Liberal Reform Party. Electoral District Of Botany
Botany was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, originally created in 1894, partly replacing Redfern, and named after and including the Sydney suburb of Botany. In 1920, parts of the electoral districts of Botany, Alexandria, Enmore, Newtown and Redfern were combined to create a new incarnation of Botany, which elected five members by proportional representation. This was replaced by single member electorates, including parts of Botany, Alexandria, Enmore, Newtown and Redfern for the 1927 election. John Dacey
John Rowland Dacey (1 June 1854 – 11 April 1912) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He moved to Victoria, Australia, with his mother after his father died. Eventually orphaned, Dacey moved to Sydney with his wife and began working as a coachmaker. He began his involvement in politics with an election to local council then moved to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 24 June 1895 to his death on 11 April 1912, serving as Treasurer in his final two years. Throughout his parliamentary career, Dacey campaigned for a garden suburb which would provide government-owned, low-cost housing to the working class. After his death, the garden suburb of Daceyville was built in Sydney and named in honour of him. Fred Page (Australian Politician)
Frederick Joseph "Fred" Page (14 August 1858 – 18 February 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born in Richmond to tanner Seth Richard Page and Sarah Hearne. He left school early to become a tanner's apprentice, working in Granville before taking over a Botany tannery in 1887. He married Elizabeth Priscilla Barratt in 1880; they had three children. Page was a Botany alderman from 1898 to 1903 and from 1924 to 1928, serving as mayor in 1902 and 1928. In 1907 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Botany. He opposed the 1913 referendum and was refused endorsement, but was re-elected anyway as an Independent Labor member. He lost his seat in 1917. He died at Botany in 1929.
