Rowing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's Eight
The men's eight event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place from 25 to 30 July 2021 at the Sea Forest Waterway. 63 rowers and coxswains from 7 nations competed. Background This was the 28th appearance of the event, which was not held at the first Games in 1896 (when bad weather forced the cancellation of all rowing events) but has been held at every Summer Olympics since 1900. The German eight won all three World Championships held in this event after the 2016 Games. No nations made their debut in the event, with all 7 qualifying places going to nations that have previously competed. The United States qualified and made their 25th appearance, most among nations. Sea Forest Waterway
The is a regatta venue for rowing (sport), rowing and canoeing, situated in Kōtō and Ōta, Tokyo, Ōta, Tokyo Bay, in Japan. History The venue was built for the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics, Paralympic Games. Construction began in 2016 and it was inaugurated in June 2019. It was built by Tokyo Metropolitan Government on the waterfront site and is the only rowing venue in Japan that meets international standards. The first international event that was held here were the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships. Rowing at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Olympic rowing events are held from 23 to 30 July 2021. Hannes Ocik (born 8 June 1991) is a German representative rower. He is a three-time world champion, twice an Olympic silver medallist and a five time gold medal winner at European Rowing Championships in the German senior men's eight — the Deutschlandachter. He stroked the German eight consistently from 2015 including their three world championship wins during their dominant period from 2017 to 2019. He was also at stroke at the 2017 World Rowing Cup II when the Deutschlandachter set a world's best time of 5.18.68, which was still the standing world mark as of 2021. Eight (rowing)
An eight is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing (crew). It is designed for eight rowers, who propel the boat with sweep oars, and is steered by a coxswain, or "cox". Each of the eight rowers has one oar. The rowers, who sit in a line in the centre of the boat and facing the stern, are usually placed alternately, with four on the port side (rower's right hand side - also traditionally known as "stroke side") and four on the starboard side (rower's lefthand side - known as "bow side"). The cox steers the boat using a rudder and is normally seated at the stern of the boat. Because of the speed of the boat, it is generally considered unsafe to row coxless or to have a bowloader cox. Henry Fieldman (born 25 November 1988) is a British rowing coxswain. He has been twice a world champion. Rowing career Fieldman competed at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Bosbaan, Amsterdam, where he won a silver medal steering the coxed pair of Alan Sinclair and Scott Durant. Thomas Ford (born 3 October 1992) is a British national representative rower. He is a two-time world champion and an Olympic bronze medallist. Club and varsity rowing Ford was rowing for the Newcastle University Boat Club when he first represented for GB at the U23 level. Following graduation he joined the Leander Club. At the 2016 Henley Royal Regatta in a Leander crew he rowed to victory in the Ladies' Challenge Plate for men's intermediate eights. In 2022, he won the Grand Challenge Cup (the blue riband event at the Henley Royal Regatta) stroking a composite Leander/Oxford Brookes crew. Charles Richard Jeremy Elwes (born 15 July 1997) is a British national representative rower. He is an Olympic medallist and two-time world champion. School, varsity & club rowing Elwes was educated at Radley College where he took up rowing. He then attended Yale University where he rowed in the Yale senior 1st eight in 2015/16 and 2016/17 inter-collegiate racing seasons. His senior club rowing in England has been from the Leander Club. Mohamed Karim Sbihi (born 27 March 1988) is a British rower. He is a three-time Olympian and Olympic medal winner. He won a gold medal in the coxless four at 2016 Rio Olympics, and at the 2012 London Olympics he was in the British crew that won the bronze medal in the men's eight. He returned to the eight for the 2020 Tokyo games, again winning bronze. Early life Sbihi was born in Kingston upon Thames to a British mother and a Moroccan father.
