The Route nationale 26, or RN26, is a highway in France connecting Verneuil-sur-Avre with Argentan. Route The road starts with a junction on the N12 and heads west to L'Aigle passing through the ''Foret d'Aigle''. The road by-passes the town to the south. Thereafter the road has been reclassified as the RD928 and follows the course of the River Risle. After Le Merlerault the road crosses the A28 autoroute. The road continues north west past the monument to ''Haras National du Pin''. Verneuil-sur-Avre
Verneuil-sur-Avre (, literally ''Verneuil on Avre'') is a former commune in the Eure department in Normandy in northern France. On 1 January 2017, it was merged into the new commune Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton. History Following the revolt of the nobles of 1118-1120, Verneuil-sur-Avre was founded in 1120 by Henry I, the fourth son of William the Conqueror. Some of the main rebels were Richer de l'Aigle, Robert de Neubourg and Eustace of Breteuil who all possessed territory in the surrounding area. Once these rebels submitted to Henry I, the fortifications in Verneuil-sur-Avre were intended to control the region. In August 1424, during the Hundred Years' War the battle of Verneuil was fought just to the north of the town. An English army of 9,000 men beat a joint Franco-Scottish army of 15,000 men and as a result gained control of Normandy and Aquitaine and destroyed Scottish participation in the war. Argentan
Argentan () is a commune and the seat of two cantons and of an arrondissement in the Orne department in northwestern France. Argentan is located NE of Rennes, ENE of the Mont Saint-Michel, SE of Cherbourg, SSE of Caen, SW of Rouen and N of Le Mans. Argentan station has rail connections to Caen, Le Mans, Paris and Granville. History Argentan is situated near the river Orne. Although the region was heavily populated during the Gallo Roman period the town is not mentioned until 1025–1026. The toponym comes from the Gaulish words ("silver") and ("market"). The town grew in importance during the Middle Ages. Throughout the Middle Ages, Argentan alternated between prosperity and destruction, as English forces occupied the city several times. The Plantagenets had considered this town as one of the most important of Normandy. During the reign of Louis XIV, Colbert set Alençon against Argentan in an economic competition on lace making. Route Nationale 12
The Route nationale 12, or RN12, is a trunk road ( nationale) in France connecting Paris with Brittany. The road forms part of European route E50. It is approximately long. History Until the 1950s, the RN 12 followed a different itinerary between Mayenne and Rennes. At Mayenne, the RN 12 was going south to Laval (now RN 162) then going west to Vitré and Rennes (now RD 57 and 857, former RN 157). The itinerary from nowadays was named RN 155 until Fougères and RN 177 from Fougères to Rennes. The RN12 has been superseded into a freeway in a big part of its itinary; the old road has been re-numbered as the RD912, RD812 and RD712. A28 Autoroute
Autoroute 28 is a French mainland motorway linking Abbeville in the Somme to Tours in Indre-et-Loire. The motorway starts at Abbeville, splitting from the A16 and, after merging with the A13 near Rouen, ends at Tours, merging with the A10. It is 405 km long. The motorway between Rouen and Tours was added to the ''Schéma Directeur Routier National'' in 1987. Between Abbeville and Rouen, the first part, the motorway was built by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. This portion of the motorway, 97 km long, is toll-free. Between Rouen and Alençon, the second part, the motorway is operated by Alis (partly owned by Sanef) and is the first autoroute of France to have had offers by European companies following the withdrawal of the SAPN in 1998 despite its contract initiated in 1995.
