Route Nationale 1 (Réunion)
Route nationale 1 is a major highway on the island of Réunion. It links the communes of Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre, and passes through all of the communes on the island's west coast. Saint-Pierre (; rcf, label= Reunionese Creole, Sin-Pyè) is the third-largest commune in the French overseas department and region of Réunion. Located on the southwest side of the island, it is the capital of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It developed from a port built from 1854 to 1882, which was used for the trade between Asia and Europe. The Nouvelle route du Littoral "New Coastal Road" or NRL is a project to reroute National route 1 from the coast to over the ocean in Réunion, a French overseas department in the south-west Indian Ocean. Built on viaducts and causeway, the road will pass over the sea for around and eventually link Saint-Denis to La Possession, replacing the current route du Littoral, which is too exposed to rockfalls from the cliff at the foot of which it is located and to heavy waves. This project has faced technical, ecological and financial challenges, and the awarding of some of the contracts is the subject of a legal inquiry.
