Route 108 (Connecticut)
Route 108 in the U.S. state of Connecticut, locally called Nichols Avenue and Huntington Turnpike, is a two-lane state highway that runs northerly from US 1, Boston Post Road in Stratford, through Trumbull, to Route 110 in downtown Shelton. Originally called the Farm Highway, it was laid out to the south side of Mischa Hill in Trumbull on December 7, 1696 and is considered to be the third oldest documented highway in Connecticut after the Mohegan Road (Route 32) in Norwich (1670) and the Boston Post Road or US 1 (1673). The section of Nichols Avenue from the Stratford-Trumbull town line to Huntington Turnpike in Trumbull is known as the Trooper Ernest Morse Memorial Highway, named in honor of a state trooper who was killed by gunfire on February 13, 1953, while trying to apprehend a suspect in a car theft. Stratford is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. It is situated on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Housatonic River. Stratford is in the Bridgeport–Stamford–Norwalk Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was settled by Puritans in 1639. The population was 52,355 as of the 2020 census. It is bordered on the west by Bridgeport, to the north by Trumbull and Shelton, and on the east by Milford (across the Housatonic River). Nichols Farms Historic District
Nichols Farms is a historic area within the town of Trumbull, Connecticut. The Nichols Farms Historic District, which encompasses part of the area, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally home to the Paugusset people, the Nichols area was colonized by the English during the Great Migration of the 1630s as a part of the coastal settlement of Stratford. The first English settlements followed soon after settlement of the mother-town in 1639. The area was governed by Stratford for eighty six years before a separate village was organized in 1725. Hence, all of Nichols Farms early public records are intermingled with and identified as ''Stratford'' records. The early English settlers named Nichols after the family who maintained a large farm in its center. It was first organized as the village of Unity in 1725. 1932 State Highway Renumbering (Connecticut)
In 1932, the Highway Department of the U.S. state of Connecticut (now known as the Connecticut Department of Transportation), decided to completely renumber all its state highways. The only exceptions were the U.S. Highways and some of the New England Interstate Routes. Between 1922 and 1932, Connecticut used a state highway numbering system shared with the other New England states. Major inter-state trunk routes used numbers in the 1-99 range, primary intrastate highways used numbers in the 100-299 range, and secondary state highways used numbers in the 300+ range. In 1926, at the behest of the American Association of State Highway Officials, four of the nine New England Interstate Routes that passed through Connecticut became U.S. Routes. At this time, the adjacent states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island abandoned the New England highway numbering system but Connecticut still used it for several more years. Connecticut Colony
The ''Connecticut Colony'' or ''Colony of Connecticut'', originally known as the Connecticut River Colony or simply the River Colony, was an English colony in New England which later became Connecticut. It was organized on March 3, 1636 as a settlement for a Puritan congregation, and the English permanently gained control of the region in 1637 after struggles with the Dutch. The colony was later the scene of a bloody war between the colonists and Pequot Indians known as the Pequot War. Route 113 is a Connecticut state highway running from the Bridgeport, Connecticut, Bridgeport-Stratford, Connecticut, Stratford town line around the Lordship, Connecticut, Lordship section of Stratford to the eastern part of the town. Route description Route 113 begins at an intersection with I-95 (CT), I-95 (Exit 30) at the Bridgeport-Stratford town line and heads east into Stratford as Lordship Boulevard. It then heads southeast along the western boundary of Sikorsky Memorial Airport, then turns east, still encircling the airport, along Oak Bluff Avenue and Prospect Drive. The transition between Oak Bluff Avenue and Prospect Drive is a roundabout intersection.
