Roumyana Slabakova
Roumyana Slabakova (Bulgarian: Румяна Слабакова) is a linguist specializing in the theory of second language acquisition (SLA), particularly acquisition of semantics, and its practical implications for teaching and studying languages. Early life and education Slabakova was born in Varna, Bulgaria, where she received her first degrees (B.A. and M.A.) from Sofia University "Kliment Ohridski" in English Philology There, she also specialized in linguistics of English as well as educational psychology. She spent some years teaching English as a second language in Varna in the period when Bulgaria was establishing itself as an independent county. After that, Slabakova embarked on her PhD project at McGill University where she was advised by Lydia White, a linguist who established generative second language acquisition as a separate field. Telicity
In linguistics, telicity (; ) is the property of a verb or verb phrase that presents an action or event as having a specific endpoint. A verb or verb phrase with this property is said to be ''telic''; if the situation it describes is ''not'' heading for any particular endpoint, it is said to be ''atelic''. Testing for telicity in English One common way to gauge whether an English verb phrase is telic is to see whether such a phrase as ''in an hour'', in the sense of "within an hour", (known as a ''time-frame adverbial'') can be applied to it. Conversely, a common way to gauge whether the phrase is atelic is to see whether such a phrase as ''for an hour'' (a ''time-span adverbial'') can be applied to it. Second-language acquisition (SLA), sometimes called second-language learning — otherwise referred to as L2 (language 2) acquisition, is the process by which people learn a second language. Second-language acquisition is also the scientific discipline devoted to studying that process. The field of second-language acquisition is regarded by some but not everybody as a sub-discipline of applied linguistics but also receives research attention from a variety of other disciplines, such as psychology and education. Suzanne Flynn
Suzanne Flynn (June 30, 1950- ) is an American linguist and Professor of Linguistics at MIT who has contributed to the fields of second and third language acquisition. She has also investigated language disorders. Research Suzanne Flynn received her PhD from Cornell University in 1983. Her work has spanned from syntax and second-language acquisition of syntax to language processing in people with neurocognitive disorders, such as changes in language during the prodromal course in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Marit Kristine Richardsen Westergaard (born 12 August 1956) is a Norwegian linguist, known for her work on child language acquisition and multilingualism. She defended her PhD thesis ''The Development of Word Order in Norwegian Child Language: The Interaction of Input and Economy Principles in the Acquisition of V2'' at the University of Tromsø in 2005.
