Charles Martel
Charles Martel ( – 22 October 741) was a Frankish political and military leader who, as Duke and Prince of the Franks and Mayor of the Palace, was the de facto ruler of Francia from 718 until his death. He was a son of the Frankish statesman Pepin of Herstal and Pepin's mistress, a noblewoman named Alpaida. Charles, also known as "The Hammer" (in Old French, ''Martel''), successfully asserted his claims to power as successor to his father as the power behind the throne in Frankish politics. Continuing and building on his father's work, he restored centralized government in Francia and began the series of military campaigns that re-established the Franks as the undisputed masters of all Gaul. Robert I, Duke Of Neustria
Robert I or Rupert (697 – 758), was a count in the Hesbaye region and Duke of Neustria. His father's name is known to be Lambert. He was a count palatine under Childeric III. Robert married Williswinda, daughter of Adalhelm, Grundherr im Wormsgau. Robert and Williswinda had three children: * Cancor (d. 771), Count of Hesbaye and Rheingau * Anselm (killed in battle in Roncesvalles, Spain, 778), Count Palatine * Thuringbert Upon his death in 758, Robert was succeeded as count by his brother-in-law Signramnus, probably prior to his son Cancor coming of age. Grifo (noble)
Grifo, Duke of Maine (726–753) was the son of the Frankish major domo Charles Martel and his second wife Swanachild. After the death of Charles Martel, power may well have been intended to be divided among Grifo and his half-brothers Pepin the Younger (Pepin the Short) and Carloman. Grifo, who was considered illegitimate by Pepin and Carloman, was besieged in Laon by his half-brothers, captured, and imprisoned in a monastery. Swanachild
Swanachild (also ''Swanahild'' or ''Serenahilt'') was the second wife of Charles Martel. Reign Swanachild belonged to the clan of the Agilolfing, though her parentage is not quite clear. Her parents could be Tassilo II, duke of Bavaria, and his wife Imma. Alternatively, her parents could be Theudebert of Bavaria, duke of Bavaria and his wife Regintrud. In the 720s Charles Martel married Swanachild. After an initial conflict, Martel established amicable relations with Bavaria. The ''Reichenau Codex'' listed her as ''Suanahil regina''. With Martel she had one child, Grifo. After the death of Martel, she supported her son's failed attempt to gain a portion of his inheritance. This she did with the support of her uncle Odilo of Bavaria. Thierry IV
Thierry IV, or Theoderic IV ( 770–793Bouchard, ''Those of My Blood'', p. 184), was a Frankish noble and royal '' missus''. Thierry's parentage is not directly attested. Speculation about how his grandson Bernard of Septimania came to be described as sharing the blood of the Carolingian rulers has led to hypotheses regarding Thierry's ancestry. One possible route has involved a relationship to Charlemagne's maternal great-grandmother, Bertrada of Prüm. A donation she executed was witnessed first by her only son, Charibert, and then by Bernarius, Chrodlanda and Theoderic. Bernarius and Chrodlanda seem to match the Guarnarius and Rotlindis who appear in a 751 document. Based on their prominence in this donation, it has been suggested that Chrodlanda/Rotlindis was either daughter or sister of Bertrada. Odilo, Duke Of Bavaria
Odilo, also Oatilo or Uatilo (died 18th January 748) of the Agilolfing dynasty was Duke of Bavaria from 737 until his death in 748. He had the ''Lex Baiuvariorum'' compilation edited, the first ancient Germanic law collection of the Bavarians. Odilo by his Agilolfing descent was an Alemannic nobleman, a son of Duke Gotfrid (d. 709) whom he succeeded in Thurgau until 737, when with the death of Hugbert of Bavaria the older line of the dynasty became extinct and he inherited the rulership of the Duchy of Bavaria. Odilo presided over the establishment of bishoprics in Bavaria in 739, when the four dioceses of Regensburg, Freising, Passau, and Salzburg were established by St. Boniface, who in 741 also founded the Diocese of Würzburg in adjacent Franconia. Sigramnus, Count Of Hesbaye
Sigramnus (Sigrand), was the Count of Hesbaye. Sigramnus became Count of Hesbaye by virtue of his marriage to the daughter of Lambert, Count of Hesbaye. The dates of his rule are unknown but are believed to be between that of Lambert’s son and grandson, and so it was perhaps an interim position until the latter became of age. The only knowledge available on Sigramnus is through his son, the Bishop of Metz, and grandson Ingerman of Hesbaye, father of Ermengard, wife of Louis the Pious. Sigramnus is known to have been an early supporter of Charles Martel, even before the Battle of Amblève. Sigramnus married Landrada, daughter of Lambert, Count of Hesbaye.
