Roswell Artist-in-Residence Compound
The Roswell Artist-in-Residence Compound is a building located at 1404 West Berrendo Road in Roswell, New Mexico. It was the former building used for the Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAiR) from 1967 too 2007, which hosted the artist studios. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 7, 2017. Roswell Artist-in-Residence history The Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAiR) program brings artists from all over the United States to create work in Roswell. The artist-in-residence program and compound was conceived, funded, and built by oilman, philanthropist, and artist, Donald B. Anderson. From 1967 to May 2002, the Roswell Museum oversaw the operation of the RAiR program, and from June 2002 until present, the program is managed by the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Foundation. The program was designed to offer 5 artists access to the one-year long residency, which included a stipend. Through RAiR, more than 200 artists have been awarded the residency. ... Roswell, New Mexico
Roswell () is a city in, and the County seat, seat of, Chaves County, New Mexico, Chaves County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. Chaves County forms the entirety of the List of micropolitan areas in New Mexico, Roswell micropolitan area. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census it had a population of 48,422, making it the fifth-largest city in New Mexico. It is home of the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), founded in 1891. The city is also the location of an Eastern New Mexico University campus. Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located a few miles northeast of the city on the Pecos River. Bottomless Lakes State Park is located east of Roswell on U.S. Route 380, US 380. Pat Passlof
Pat Passlof (August 5, 1928 – November 13, 2011) was an American abstract expressionist painter. Biography Passlof was born in Georgia in 1928 and grew up in New York City, attending Queens College. In the summer of 1948, she studied painting with Willem de Kooning at Black Mountain College, and continued to study with him privately after they returned to New York. That fall, De Kooning introduced her to Milton Resnick. She and Resnick began to live together in the mid-1950s and married in 1962. Passlof was an integral member of the art scene in New York for six decades; her life, career, and writing intersecting with major touchstones: from “The Club” and the cooperatives on Tenth Street, to the famed Green Gallery, the feminist art movement, to generations of students at the City University of New York. Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art (AMoCA) is an American art museum founded in 1994 and located in Roswell, New Mexico. The museum was formed from the Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAIR) program, and displays work from the former participants. History The residency and art collection was started in 1967 by Donald B. Anderson (1919–2020), who wanted to bring national art and artists to Roswell. Donald B. Anderson had made his money in oil industry as a founder and executive at Anderson Oil Company, and later turned painter and art collector. Since June 2002, the museum has been administered by the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Foundation. In 2017, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAIR) won the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Howard Cook
Howard Norton Cook (1901–1980) was an American artist, particularly known for his wood engravingsBecker, p.56. and murals. Cook spent much of the 1920s in Europe and returned to live in Taos, New Mexico. Cook first came to Taos, New Mexico in 1926 commissioned by '' The Forum'' to make a series of woodcuts to illustrate ''Death Comes for the Archbishop'' that would be published serially in the periodical. In Taos he was introduced to artist Barbara Latham by Victor Higgins. The couple married in May 1927. From 1928 to 1935, they traveled: to Europe, Mexico and the American South. Working for New Deal art projects, Cook produced murals for courthouses in Pittsburgh (Section of Painting and Sculpture) and Springfield, Massachusetts (Public Works of Art Project). He also produced a 16-panel fresco, ''The Importance of San Antonio in Texas History'', in a San Antonio post office, for which he was paid $12,000 in 1937. Taos is a town in Taos County in the north-central region of New Mexico in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Roswell Museum
The Roswell Museum (formerly Roswell Museum and Art Center) was founded in 1936 and is located in Roswell, New Mexico, United States. The museum features exhibits about the art and history of the American Southwest, as well as the Robert H. Goddard laboratory. The museum operates the Patricia Lubben Bassett Art Education Center, opened in 1998, as a learning facility. The facility houses two classrooms, a ceramics studio, and research library, all of which supports a museum-school-community creative exchange that provides arts education opportunities for all ages. The Robert H. Goddard Planetarium was built through an initiative shared by the museum and the Roswell Independent School District in 1968. The ''Roswell Daily Record'' is a local newspaper located in Roswell, New Mexico, and has a circulation of less than 12,000. The paper is well known in the UFO community because it reported the alleged Roswell UFO crash in 1947. Eric Sall is an artist from South Dakota. Education Sall attended the Yale Summer Program in 1998, graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
