Roselle (plant)
Roselle (''Hibiscus sabdariffa'') is a species of flowering plant in the genus ''Hibiscus'' that is native to Africa, most likely West Africa and also found in India especially Maharashtra with local name ambali. In the 16th and early 17th centuries it was spread to the West Indies and Asia, respectively, where it has since become naturalized in many places. The stems are used for the production of bast fibre and the dried cranberry-tasting calyces are commonly steeped to make a popular infusion known as carcade. Description Roselle is an annual or perennial herb or woody-based subshrub, growing to tall. The leaves are deeply three- to five-lobed, long, arranged alternately on the stems. The flowers are in diameter, white to pale yellow with a dark red spot at the base of each petal, and have a stout, conspicuous calyx at the base, wide, enlarging to and becoming fleshy and a deep crimson red as the fruit matures, which takes about six months. USS ''Roselle'' (AM-379) was an acquired by the United States Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in the water to prevent ships from passing. She was the second United States Navy warship to be so named. ''Roselle'' was laid down 24 February 1944, by the Gulf Shipbuilding Corp., Chickasaw, Alabama; launched 29 August 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Louis E. Griffith; and commissioned 6 February 1945. Pacific Ocean operations Following shakedown at Little Creek, Virginia, she replaced as training vessel there on 24 April 1945. Completing six months of minesweeper training operations in the Atlantic Ocean, she transited the Panama Canal and joined the U.S. Pacific Fleet on 23 October 1945. Rusellae
Rusellae was an important ancient town of Etruria (roughly modern Tuscany), which survived until the Middle Ages before being abandoned. The impressive archaeological remains lie near the modern ''frazione'' or village of Roselle () in the ''comune'' of Grosseto. The remains of the ancient buildings were brought to light by means of a long campaign of excavations carried out under archaeologist Clelia Laviosa beginning in the 1950s., s.v. "Rusellae" More recent work has revealed many more impressive buildings. Geography Roselle was located at the point of transition between the valley of Ombrone and the Maremma of Grosseto, on the shore of the ancient lake Prile (the ancient ''Lacus Prelius''). The first USS ''Roselle'' (SP-350) was a minesweeper that served in the United States Navy during 1917. ''Roselle'' was built as a commercial steam harbor tug of the same name in 1903 by Neafie and Levy at Philadelphia.
