Rosebud (band)
Rosebud was the name of an American popular music group which released a single, eponymous album in 1971. Its members were Judy Henske, Jerry Yester, Craig Doerge, John Seiter, and David Vaught. The album was a follow-up to the Henske-Yester collaboration, ''Farewell Aldebaran''. Perhaps to its detriment, Rosebud was seen as a democratic enterprise, with all band members contributing songs and singing, broadly in a countryish soft rock style—rather than making the best use of Henske's remarkable voice and songwriting abilities. Following its release and a couple of live shows, the band split up, Henske and Yester divorced, and she and Doerge married. Yester is credited as the producer of their lone album. The LP was released on the Straight Records, Straight/Reprise Records, Reprise label; the album was rereleased on CD in 2004 by Collectors' Choice Music, and again in 2017 with bonus tracks by Omnivore Recordings. Judy Henske
Judith Anne "Judy" Henske (December 20, 1936 – April 27, 2022) was an American singer and songwriter, dubbed "the Queen of the Beatniks" by producer Jack Nitzsche. Initially performing in folk clubs in the early 1960s, her performances and recordings embraced blues, jazz, show tunes, and humorous material. Her 1963 recording of " High Flying Bird" was influential on folk-rock, and her 1969 album '' Farewell Aldebaran'', with husband Jerry Yester, was an eclectic "fusion of folk music, psychedelia, and arty pop". Jerry Yester
Jerome Alan Yester (born January 9, 1943) is an American folk rock musician, record producer, and arranger. Biography Yester was born in Birmingham, Alabama, United States, and grew up in Burbank, California. He formed a duo with brother Jim Yester, the Yester Brothers, and starting playing folk clubs in Los Angeles in 1960. When Jim enlisted in the army, Jerry joined The New Christy Minstrels, and then, in 1963, the Modern Folk Quartet. The MFQ released two albums in the next two years, and Yester also branched out into other recordings, playing piano on The Lovin' Spoonful's " Do You Believe in Magic" in 1965. The MFQ split up in 1966, and Yester began work as a solo artist and as a producer, with his wife Judy Henske, his brother Jim's band the Association, The Turtles, and Tim Buckley, for whom he produced '' Goodbye and Hello'' and '' Happy Sad''. Craig Doerge
Craig Doerge (; born December 4, 1944) is an American keyboard player, session musician, songwriter, record producer, best known for his keyboard work with Crosby Stills and Nash, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne. Biography He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Doerge (rhymes with Fergie) had an R&B band through college at Hartford, Connecticut, and then moved to Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles in the late-1960s to work as a studio player and songwriter with A&M Records, and with Jim Keltner, Larry Carlton, and others playing on early Kenny Rogers First Edition tracks, The Challengers, and cartoon shows, ("Groovy Ghoolies" and "Fat Albert"). After appearing on the Frank Zappa production, The GTOs' album ''Permanent Damage'', he teamed up with Judy Henske, Jerry Yester and Jon Sieter, in the band Rosebud, marrying Henske in 1973. John Seiter
John Seiter (born August 17, 1944) is an American musician. He is best known for his work as a drummer for Spanky and Our Gang and The Turtles. Biography Seiter's first official credit came on a 1972 recording of ''Peter and the Wolf'' for United Artists, the brainchild of actor and director Rob Reiner. Seiter first rose to prominence, however, as a member of the pop group Spanky and Our Gang. He joined the band in 1967, shortly after they achieved their first charting hit, " Sunday Will Never Be the Same", and stayed for three studio albums and a live concert recording. The band collapsed after the 1968 death of Malcolm Hale, and Seiter accepted a position as drummer for The Turtles, replacing John Barbata. The Turtles recorded one final studio album, ''Turtle Soup'', then disbanded as well. Originally released on Frank Zappa's Straight record label, it contains an eclectic mix of songs in a wide variety of styles and is also notable for its early use of synthesisers. Straight Records
Straight Records, self-identified simply as Straight, was a record label formed in 1969 to distribute productions and discoveries of Frank Zappa and his business partner/manager Herb Cohen. Straight was formed at the same time as a companion label, Bizarre Records. Straight and Bizarre were manufactured and distributed in the U.S. by the Warner Bros. Records family of labels, which also included Reprise Records. Straight recordings were distributed in the U.K. by CBS Records. Frank Zappa chose the majority of the artists for the Straight label. His original intention was to release albums by avant-garde artists on Bizarre, and recordings by more mainstream artists on Straight. However the original concept failed to work out as expected due to issues with record distribution and artist management. Frank Zappa, the Mothers of Invention, Wild Man Fischer, and Lenny Bruce certainly fit in at Bizarre, but all others ended up on Straight. This led to some very unusual albums on ...
