Rose Kekedo
Dame Rosalina Violet Kekedo (1942 – 25 February 2005), better known as Rose Kekedo, was a leading educator in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the first woman to be chancellor of the University of Papua New Guinea. Early life Rosalina Violet Kekedo's parents, Mary Kekedo, Mary Angela and Walter Kekedo came from Milne Bay Province and Central Province (Papua New Guinea), Central Province in Papua New Guinea. Rose, as she would be known, was born in 1942 in Abau, Central Province, where her father, Walter, worked as a clerk and her mother, Mary Kekedo, Mary, was a teacher. She was the second eldest in a family of ten children, six girls and four boys. When she was three years old, the family moved to Kokoda in what is now Oro Province. Her mother, who would subsequently be made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE), set up a school in the area, which would eventually have 200 children, and was also actively involved in helping women to improve their lives. Dame Commander Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Madang
Madang (old German name: ''Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen'') is the capital of Madang Province and is a town with a population of 27,420 (in 2005) on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. It was first settled by the Germans in the 19th century. History Russian biologist Nicholai Miklukho-Maklai was probably the first European to visit the area. In 1871 he stayed at Astrolabe Bay south of present-day Madang for 15 months. He had a good relationship with the local communities before leaving, suffering from malaria. In April 1884 an expedition by the German New Guinea Company led by Otto Finsch and Eduard Dallmann arrived and named the landing point "Friedrich Wilhelmshafen"; however, they felt that the area was unsuitable for a settlement. A subsequent survey in 1888 mentioned good soil conditions that would make a coffee plantation possible. Boroko
Boroko is a suburb of Port Moresby, the capital city of Papua New Guinea. It includes a residential area and a sports and recreation precinct, and was once a significant commercial centre but the business area is now in decline. History The town of Port Moresby was mainly confined to the peninsula near the port facilities in the early decades of the 20th century. An influx of Australian and American military personnel during World War II increased the rate of expansion inland, including the upgrade of the airstrip at Seven Mile (now Jacksons Airport), and the use of Murray Barracks at Four Mile, next to Boroko. Jean Kekedo
Dame Jean Lucilla Kekedo is a Papua New Guinean activist who has held senior roles in the country's public service, including that of Ombudsman and High commissioner to the United Kingdom. Early life After World War II, Jean Lucilla Kekedo's parents moved from Central Province to Kokoda in what is now Oro Province, with her father, Walter, being given the responsibility to prepare Kokoda for the arrival of Australian officers. Her mother, Mary Kekedo, established a school there, which had 200 children. Kekedo attended this school and later went to school in the provincial capital of Popondetta, where the students had to grow much of their own food. Like her two elder sisters, she won a scholarship to study in Australia, but turned this down in order to go to Rabaul High School in East New Britain. 2020 Birthday Honours
The Queen's Birthday Honours for 2020 are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries.
