Meridian Plantation
Meridian Plantation was a quail hunting plantation in central Leon County, Florida. It was established by Arthur Lapsley in 1915. Lapsley was from Pomfret Center in Pomfret, Connecticut. Meridian Plantation had previously been Mossview Plantation, and owned by the Whitehead family. In 1933, Meridian Plantation was purchased by Dwight F. Davis. Davis was Assistant Secretary of War under President Calvin Coolidge and Governor General of the Philippines from 1929-1932. Davis also founded the tennis world's prestigious Davis Cup. In 1945, Davis died with Meridian becoming the property of Griscom Bettle, nephew to Lloyd C. Griscom of Luna Plantation. Bettle would also acquire Rose Hill Plantation, a smaller plantation which bordered Lake Elizabeth on its east and also had considerable acreage near Lake Jackson. Rose Hill (Louisburg, North Carolina)
Rose Hill, later known known as Timberlake House, is a historic plantation house located near Louisburg, Franklin County, North Carolina. The main block was built about 1803, and is a two-story, five bay, transitional Georgian / Federal style frame dwelling. It has a gable roof and double-shouldered brick end chimneys. A rear ell was expanded about 1840, and about 1880 a one-story Queen Anne-style, full width verandah was added. About 1910, a Neoclassical portico was added over the verandah, as was a bathroom wing. Also on the property are the contributing slave quarter (c. 1840), kitchen (c. 1840), playhouse (c. 1910), and generator / wellhouse (c. 1910). Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site
Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site is a historic site in Union County, South Carolina, that preserves the home of William H. Gist (1807-1874), the 68th governor of South Carolina. Gist helped instigate a Secession Convention in South Carolina, which led to the creation of the Ordinance of Secession that preceded the Civil War. William Gist was the natural son of Francis Fincher Gist (c. 1773–1819), a Charleston merchant and South Carolina state representative, who by 1811 had purchased land in Upstate South Carolina. Either Francis Fincher or William Henry built a Georgian-style brick house (c. 1811–1830), eventually called Rose Hill after the many varieties of roses planted in its formal gardens. In the late 1850s and early 1860s, William Gist remodeled the house, adding two-tiered back and front porches and stuccoing the brick in order to transform the exterior into the more fashionable Greek revival-style. Rose Hill Plantation House (sometimes Rose Hill Mansion) is an historic Carpenter Gothic house located on US 278 in Bluffton, Beaufort County, South Carolina. It was begun in 1858 for Dr. John Kirk and Caroline Kerk, his wife, but construction was interrupted by the Civil War and not resumed until after World War II when it was renovated and finished by architect Willis Irvin for John Sturgeon and Florence Sturgeon, his wife. On May 19, 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It preserves the antebellum plantation home of Dr. & Mrs. John William (1803-1868) & Caroline (1815-1864) Kirk, a wealthy planter and physician. Rose Hill is a historic plantation house located near Nashville, Nash County, North Carolina. It consists of a late-18th or early-19th century dwelling with a Victorian addition.
