Roscoe is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Carbon County, Montana, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 15. Roscoe depends on light tourism and features a guest ranch, the Pioneer Pottery, and the Grizzly Bar & Grill. Situated on Montana Highway 78, Roscoe is 20 miles from Red Lodge and 13 miles from Absarokee. Demographics History Roscoe was originally called Morris. Its post office was established on July 6, 1901, with Timothy F. George at its first postmaster. The post office officially changed the name from Morris to Roscoe on February 14, 1905. Norris is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in northeastern Madison County, Montana, Madison County, Montana, United States, at the intersection of U.S. Route 287#Montana, U.S. Route 287 and Montana Highway 84. Absarokee, Montana
Absarokee ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stillwater County, Montana, United States, approximately south of Columbus on Highway 78. It is named after the Crow Indians who formerly inhabited the land. The population was 1,234 at the 2000 census. The Stillwater Mine, operated by the Stillwater Mining Company, is located near Absarokee. Name The name Absarokee is derived from ''Apsáalookěi'', the name given to the Crow Indian Tribe by the related Hidatsa people with ''Apsáa'' meaning "large-beaked bird" and ''lookěi'' meaning "children". ''Apsáalookěi'' thus literally means "children of the large-beaked bird". (The name "Crow" comes from the French ''gens du corbeaux'' or "people of the crows" as ''Apsáalookěi ''was translated by French fur traders in 1743.) Red Lodge, Montana
Red Lodge is a city and county seat of Carbon County, Montana, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 2,257. History On September 17, 1851, the United States government signed a treaty with the Crow Nation, ceding the area which now contains Red Lodge, MT to the Crow Indians. Rich coal deposits were found there in 1866, and gold was discovered nearby in 1870. An 1880 treaty between the U.S. government and the Crow allowed the area to be settled starting April 11, 1882. The Red Lodge post office was established on Dec 9, 1884 with Postmaster Ezra L. Benton. A rail line was constructed into town, and coal shipments began in June 1889. The boundaries of the Crow Reservation were redrawn October 15, 1892, opening the whole area to settlement. From then until the 1930s, coal mining defined the town. A guest ranch, also known as a dude ranch, is a type of ranch oriented towards visitors or tourism. It is considered a form of agritourism. History Guest ranches arose in response to the romanticization of the American West that began to occur in the late 19th century. In 1893, historian Frederick Jackson Turner stated that the United States frontier was demographically "closed". This in turn led many people to have feelings of nostalgia for bygone days, but also, given that the risks of a true frontier were gone, allowed for nostalgia to be indulged in relative safety. Thus, the person referred to as a "tenderfoot" or a "greenhorn" by westerners was finally able to visit and enjoy the advantages of western life for a short period of time without needing to risk life and limb.
