Rosa 'George Dickson'
''Rosa'' 'George Dickson' is a medium red hybrid tea rose bred by Alexander Dickson II of Northern Ireland in 1912. It was one of the Dickson nursery's early commercial successes and was a popular rose with the public. It was awarded the Royal National Rose Society (RNRS) gold medal in 1911 and is an ancestor of the legendary 'Peace' rose. Description 'George Dickson' is a tall upright shrub, in height, with a spread. It has large petals and a strong, sweet fragrance. Flowers are cupped and cabbage-like when they first open, but later disintegrate into a mass of petals. Flowers are medium red with a dark red reverse. Blooms are borne singly or in small, condensed clusters. The plant has long stems and can be used as a short climber. Leaves are large and dull green and are prone to mildew. Dickson Roses
Dickson Nurseries is a family owned rose nursery in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland. The firms The nursery was founded by Alexander Dickson I (1801–1880) in 1836. His sons Hugh (c. 1831–1904) and George I (1832–1914) both became interested in roses. The firm became ''Alexander Dickson and Sons''. A separate firm, ''Royal Nurseries'', was founded by Hugh in 1869. With the help of George's sons Alexander II (December 20, 1857 – 1949) and George II they started breeding roses in the late 1870s. The main firm later changed its name to ''Dicksons of Hawlmark'' and finally became ''Dickson Nurseries'' when it moved from Hawlmark to Milecross Road, Newtownards, in 1969. Royal National Rose Society
The Royal National Rose Society (RNRS) (1876-2017) was a specialist horticultural organization in the United Kingdom dedicated to the cultivation and appreciation of roses. Founded in 1876 as the "National Rose Society", it was the world's oldest plant society. It was a membership organisation, with members drawn from professional and amateur gardeners and horticultural businesses. Originally based in London, the rose society moved its headquarters to Chiswell Green, near St Albans, Hertfordshire in 1959, where it created the Royal National Rose Society Gardens. In 1965, the society changed its name to the "Royal National Rose Society" (RNRS). At the height of its popularity, the RNRS had 100,000 members and its gardens contained 30,000 rose shrubs. Rosa 'Peace'
The Peace rose, formally ''Rosa'' 'Madame A. Meilland', is a well-known and successful garden rose. By 1992, over one hundred million plants of this hybrid tea had been sold. The cultivar has large flowers of a light yellow to cream color, slightly flushed at the petal edges with crimson-pink. It is hardy and vigorous and relatively resistant to disease, making it popular in gardens as well as in the floral trade. It was developed by French horticulturist Francis Meilland, in the years 1935 to 1939. When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France, he sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose. It is said that it was sent to the US on the last plane available before the German invasion, where it was safely propagated by the Conard Pyle Co. during the war.
