Roobarb
''Roobarb'' (also known as ''Roobarb and Custard'') is a British animated children's television series, created by Grange Calveley and originally shown on BBC1 just before the evening news. Each cartoon, written by Calveley and directed by Bob Godfrey, was about five minutes long. Thirty episodes were made, and the show was first shown on 21 October 1974. The theme is that of the friendly rivalry between Roobarb, a green dog with an overactive imagination, and Custard, the mischievous laconic pink cat from next door. The narration of the series was provided by the actor Richard Briers. On 17 February 2013, Briers died, followed four days later by animator Godfrey. Original series Roobarb is a green dog, and Custard is a pink cat. Roobarb is always involved in some kind of misadventure which he approaches with unbounded enthusiasm. Grange Calveley
Grange Calveley (6 May 1943 – 22 August 2021) was a British writer and artist who was best known as the creator of the BBC's animated television series ''Roobarb'' (1974) and '' Noah and Nelly in... SkylArk'' (1977). Calveley also wrote and made character drawings for the 2005 revival series, ''Roobarb and Custard Too''. The series was commissioned by UK's Channel FIVE and directed by Jason Tammenagi. Early life Grange Calveley was born on 6 May 1943 in Cheshire, England. His father was with the Scots Guards and was killed at Arezzo in 1944. After Art College, Calveley worked for a number of advertising agencies in London. Richard Briers
Richard David Briers (14 January 1934 – 17 February 2013) was an English actor whose five-decade career encompassed film, radio, stage and television. Briers first came to prominence as George Starling in ''Marriage Lines'' (1961–66), but it was a few years later, when he narrated ''Roobarb'' (1974–76) and '' Noah and Nelly in... SkylArk'' (1976–77) and played Tom Good in the BBC sitcom '' The Good Life'' (1975–78), that he became a household name. Jason Tammemagi
Jason Tammemagi is the creator, writer and director of preschool show, ''Fluffy Gardens''. He also directed ''Roobarb & Custard Too'', ''Planet Cosmo'', and Irish animated drama, ''Ballybraddan''. Jason was Creative Director of Geronimo Productions (formerly Monster Animation & Design, production company of ''Fluffy Gardens'', ''Ballybraddan'', and ''Punky (animated series), Punky'') which was awarded European Producer of the Year at the Cartoon Forum 2011. He is now Creative Director of children's media company, Mooshku. Jason has a background in classical animation and directed commercials before working on ''Roobarb'' with A&B TV. The director said that he would "love to do something like that" but he and Kay regarded it mostly as a joke. Shaft (rave)
Shaft was an English electronic music group, scoring a top 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart in December 1991 with "Roobarb & Custard". It featured recreated vocal samples from the vintage children's television cartoon ''Roobarb'', as well as a variety of sound effects. The main contributors were the British record producers Mark Pritchard and Adrian Hughes. Although the single reached the top 10 in 1991, it climbed to its highest position of No. 7 in January 1992. The follow-up track was "Monkey", which peaked at No. 61 in July 1992. The use of samples from children's television programmes was not unique to this hit within the genre, with Mark Summers having sampled ''The Magic Roundabout'' in his early 1991 hit " Summers Magic". However, Shaft was the first dance act to reach the top 10 with a track using this type of formula. ''Eureeka's Castle'' is an American children's television series created by Debby Beece and Judy Katschke. It originally aired on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. block from September 4, 1989 to November 10, 1991. The program featured various puppet characters who live in a giant's wind-up music box. The show was a joint development by Nickelodeon, animators Kit Laybourne and Eli Noyes of Noyes & Laybourne Enterprises, and the puppeteers at 3/Design Studio. R. L. Stine developed the characters and was the head writer for the episodes. Synopsis The show follows various puppet characters including Eureeka, a sorceress-in-training. Johnny Hawksworth
Johnny Hawksworth (2 February 1924 – 13 February 2009) was a British bass player and composer who lived and worked in Australia beginning in 1984. Biography Born in London in 1924, Hawksworth initially trained as a pianist, but also played double bass for Britain's leading big band the Ted Heath Orchestra during the early 1950s and through the 1960s. During this time he became one of the most popular jazz bassists in the UK, winning many polls and was often featured as a soloist on Heath concerts and recordings. He is probably best known, however, for his short compositions for television.
