Ronald James McLean
Ronald James McLean (22 January 1914 – 26 May 1980) was a New Zealand farmer, aviator, community leader and environmental campaigner. He was born in Wyndham, New Zealand, on 22 January 1914. McLean is best known as spokesperson for the Save Manapouri campaign. He chaired the Southland committee of the group and travelled the country, speaking to numerous audiences. In the end, there were 19 committees throughout the nation and McLean had helped establish most of them. After the 1972 general election brought a change of government, the Labour Party made good of its election promise and appointed six Guardians of Lake Manapouri in 1973. McLean was a Guardian until his death. In the 1974 New Year Honours, McLean was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the community. Wyndham, New Zealand
Wyndham is a rural town of 579 people in the South Island of New Zealand in the Southland region, 45 km (28 mi) east of Invercargill and 25 km (15 mi) south of Gore. The original Māori name of the locality was Mokoreta (clear or sweet water). The name "Wyndham" was first used in the district when John Anderson named his runs 161 and 162 Upper Windham Station and Lower Windham Station in 1857. The name was soon mis-spelt to its more common form and the Mokoreta river also became known as the Wyndham river. The town was then named in 1869 for the adjacent river, so indirectly named for General Sir Charles Ash Windham who fought in the Crimean War. The streets are in turn named for events, places, battles and personalities from that war. The town was initially surveyed in 1869 and gazetted a town district in 1882. Save Manapouri Campaign
The Save Manapouri campaign was an environmental campaign waged between 1969 and 1972 in New Zealand to prevent the raising of the levels of lakes Manapouri and Te Anau as part of the construction of the Manapouri Power Project. Origins The original plans for Manapouri Power Station development involved raising Lake Manapouri by up to 30 metres, and merging Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau. The Save Manapouri Campaign was launched at a public meeting at Invercargill in October 1969. The 1972 New Zealand general election was held on 25 November to elect MPs to the 37th session of the New Zealand Parliament. The Labour Party, led by Norman Kirk, defeated the governing National Party. Background The National Party had been in office since the 1960 election, when it had defeated the ruling Labour Party, led by Walter Nash. The Second Labour Government was the shortest-lasting of all New Zealand governments to that day; in contrast, the Second National Government, led for the majority of its tenure by Keith Holyoake, would be re-elected three times. National's policies were focused around stability and a "steady as she goes" approach, but Holyoake's Government was increasingly perceived as tired and worn-out. Guardians Of Lake Manapouri
The Guardians of Lake Manapouri, Monowai and Te Anau is a statutory body appointed to make recommendations to the New Zealand Minister of Conservation on any matters arising from the environmental, ecological, and social effects of the operation of the Manapouri Power Station on the townships of Manapouri and Te Anau, Lake Manapouri and Lake Te Anau and their shorelines, and on the rivers flowing in and out of those lakes, having particular regard to the effects of the operation on social values, conservation, recreation, tourism, and related activities and amenities. The Conservation Act 1987 sets out the functions and roles of the Guardians. Since 1998, the act stipulates that at least one Guardian must be a person nominated by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. Kennington, New Zealand
Kennington is a town located in the Southland region of New Zealand’s South Island. It is situated on the Waihopai River on the eastern outskirts of the city of Invercargill. Other nearby settlements include Longbush, Myross Bush, Motu Rimu, and Woodlands. State Highway 1 runs through the town, as does the Main South Line portion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway. Passenger trains have not operated since the cancellation of the Southerner on 10 February 2002, though it was an express service and local passenger trains that stopped in Kennington had ceased to operate decades earlier. In the early 2000s (decade), a proposal to build a large incinerator in Kennington generated controversy and was ultimately abandoned.
