Romsdalshorn
Romsdalshornet is a mountain in the municipality of Rauma in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The mountain is located southeast of the town of Ă…ndalsnes, along the Rauma River in the Romsdalen valley. The Rauma railway line and the European route E136 highway both pass by the mountain. The mountain Store Venjetinden lies east of the mountain and to the west (across the valley) lies the mountain Store Trolltind—part of the Troll Wall/Trollryggen ridge. Romsdalshornet is a popular mountain for climbing, which is best done in late summer. Descent by rappel is recommended. History The first "official" ascent was 1 September 1881 by the Danish climber, Carl Hall, together with Norwegians, Erik Norahagen and Mathias Soggemoen. Romsdalen
Romsdalen is a valley in the western part of Norway. The long valley runs through Rauma Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county and Lesja Municipality in Innlandet county. It is the valley of the Rauma river, from Old Norse word ''Raumsdalr'' which means Rauma valley. The traditional district of Romsdal, which makes up about one-third of Møre og Romsdal county, is named for the valley of Romsdalen. The main road E136 and the Rauma line runs along the valley floor. '' Mannen'' is an unstable rock above the valley. Mannen is expected to someday slide into the valley floor and block the river. There could be devastating flood downstream, if the river suddenly breaks through the dam created by the rockslide. Rauma, Norway
Rauma is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Romsdal. The administrative centre is the town of Åndalsnes. Other settlements in Rauma include the villages of Måndalen, Innfjorden, Veblungsnes, Verma, Isfjorden, Eidsbygda, Rødven, Åfarnes, and Mittet. Most settlement in the municipality is located along the fjords and in the Romsdalen valley. The municipality surrounds part of the southern end of Romsdalsfjorden and the Isfjorden and it also includes the Romsdalen valley and Romsdalsalpene mountains. In the lower part of the valleys and around Romsdal Fjord and Rødvenfjorden are driven agriculture with emphasis on livestock. Arne Randers Heen
Arne Randers Heen (4 April 1905 – 7 February 1991) was a Norwegian mountain climber and member of the Norwegian resistance during World War II. Personal life Heen was born in Hen, Møre og Romsdal, and worked as a tailor in nearby Ă…ndalsnes. He was a half brother of Gunnar Randers junior and uncle of Jørgen Randers. His father Gunnar Randers senior (1877-1963) was a civil engineer that worked in Ă…lesund after the 1904 fire. Heen's mother Sofie Heen (1877–1959) at the time worked as a waitress in Ă…lesund. His parents did not marry. Arne Randers Heen was a tailor like his mother. Career Heen is known for several first ascents, and his many ascents of Romsdalshorn, including the first winter climbing of the mountain. He was Norway's leading mountaineer from the 1920s to the 1950s. Mathias Soggemoen
Mathias Soggemoen (5 October 1847 – 1929) was a Norwegian railway worker, mountain climbing pioneer and guide. Mathias Johnsen Soggemoen was born the oldest of seven siblings in Rauma in Møre og Romsdal, Norway. In 1875, he married Ingeborg Olsdatter Sogge Brekken and settled at the village of Veblungsnes. They were the parents of nine children. Later in life, Mathias and Ingeborg Soggemoen emigrated to America with several of their children. Soggemoen is known for a number of first ascents of Norwegian mountains. Among his first ascents are Store Austanbotntind (1883, with Carl Hall), Store Styggedalstinden (1883, with Hall), Midtre Skagastølstind (1884, with Hall), Hjelledalstind (1884, with Hall), Storebjørn (1884, with Hall), and Sentraltind (1885, with Hall and Torger S. Store Venjetinden
Store Venjetinden (or sometimes ''Store Vengetinden'') is a mountain in the municipality of Rauma in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located about northeast of the mountain Romsdalshornet, about east of the Rauma river and European Route E136, and about southeast of the town of Ă…ndalsnes. or the is mountain range surrounding the Romsdalen valley in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. They are primarily located in Rauma Municipality, Molde Municipality, and Fjord Municipality. Rauma River
The Rauma is a river that runs through ''Romsdalen'', a valley in Møre og Romsdal and Innlandet counties in Norway. It runs for from ''Lesjaskogsvatnet'', a lake in the municipality of Lesja, to the town of Åndalsnes in the municipality of Rauma. The river was once famous for its salmon-fishing, but since an infection with ''Gyrodactylus salaris'' only 5 to 10% of the original stock survives. This, however, has begun to recover rapidly after a successful revitalisation project. The salmon runs up to the '' Slettafossen'', a high combination of waterfalls and rapids more than upriver from the estuary. The Rauma River and its valley are regarded as one of the most beautiful in Norway. Rauma Line
The Rauma Line ( no, Raumabanen) is a long railway between the town of Åndalsnes (in Rauma Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county), and the village of Dombås (in Dovre Municipality in Oppland county), in Norway. Running down the Romsdalen valley, the line opened between 1921 and 1924 as a branch of the Dovre Line, which connects to the cities of Oslo and Trondheim. Originally intended as the first stage to connect Ålesund, and possibly also Molde and Kristiansund, no extensions have ever been realized. The unelectrified line is served four times daily with Norwegian State Railways' Class 93, although in the summer the service only operates from Åndalsnes to Bjorli as a tourist service. Cairn
A cairn is a man-made pile (or stack) of stones raised for a purpose, usually as a marker or as a burial mound. The word ''cairn'' comes from the gd, cĂ rn (plural ).
