Rome 11 O'clock
''Rome 11 o'clock'' or ''Roma, ore 11'' (1952) is an Italian film directed by Giuseppe De Santis and one of the best examples of Neorealist filmmaking. The dramatic plot is based on the real story of an accident that happened on 15 January 1951 on Via Savoia in Rome when a staircase collapsed because of the weight of two hundred women waiting for a job interview. One woman was killed and 76 were injured. Augusto Genina made the film '' Tre storie proibite'', based on the same tragic event. Plot In the early 1950s, Italy was suffering from serious unemployment and it was especially difficult for women to get jobs. In response to a newspaper ad seeking a secretary for an accountant's office, the two hundred women crowded the small building's staircase, hoping for an interview. Giuseppe De Santis
Giuseppe De Santis (11 February 1917 – 16 May 1997) was an Italian film director. One of the most idealistic neorealist filmmakers of the 1940s and 1950s, he wrote and directed films punctuated by ardent cries for social reform. He was the brother of Italian cinematographer Pasqualino De Santis. His wife was Gordana Miletic (native spelling: Miletić), a Yugoslav actress and former ballet dancer. Biography De Santis was born in Fondi, Lazio. He was a member of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and fought with the anti-German Resistance in Rome during World War II. He was first a student of philosophy and literature before entering Rome's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Elena Varzi
Elena Varzi (21 December 1926 – 1 September 2014) was an Italian film actress. Life and career Born in Rome, in spite of a non-professional acting background, Varzi made her film debut in a leading role, as the Sicilian Maria Antonia in Renato Castellani's neorealist post-war comedy-drama ''It's Forever Springtime''. Her second role, as the mistress of a Sicilian bandit in Pietro Germi's ''Path of Hope'', received critical acclaim. It was during filming ''The Forbidden Christ'' that Varzi met and later married Raf Vallone. She eventually left her film career, devoting herself to the family. She was the mother of Arabella, Saverio, and Eleonora Vallone. Her husband died in 2002. Death Varzi died of cardiac arrest at her holiday cottage in Sperlonga, Latina, on 1 September 2014. ''Cabiria'' is a 1914 Italian epic silent film, directed by Giovanni Pastrone and shot in Turin. The film is set in ancient Sicily, Carthage, and Cirta during the period of the Second Punic War (218–202 BC). It follows a melodramatic main plot about an abducted little girl, Cabiria, and features an eruption of Mount Etna, heinous religious rituals in Carthage, the alpine trek of Hannibal, Archimedes' defeat of the Roman fleet at the Siege of Syracuse and Scipio maneuvering in North Africa. Apart from being a classic on its own terms, the film is also notable for being the first film in which the long-running film character Maciste makes his debut. According to Martin Scorsese, in this work Pastrone invented the epic movie and deserves credit for many of the innovations often attributed to D.W. Griffith and Cecil B. DeMille.
