The Romanian Handball Federation ( ro, Federaţia Română de Handbal) (FRH) is the governing body of handball in Romania. It is based in Bucharest. FRH is led by 6 departments. History * The official rules of the game are written and published by Karl Schelenz in Berlin (1919). * On 17 June 1921, the first game of handball takes place in Romania. The game was played at the Central Stadium Sibiu. It was organized by professor Wilhelm Binder, and the teams were two local high schools: Brukenthal High School and Girls High School. * In 1931, Sibiu will organize the first major competition: Transylvania Cup. * In 1933, handball is added to the existing Romanian Volleyball and Basketball Federation becoming Romanian Volleyball, Basketball and Handball Federation (FRVBH). * In 1934, Transylvania Cup becomes Handball National League. Sport in Romania are an important part of the country's culture. Romania has risen to prominence in a number of sporting areas in recent decades. Association football is the most popular sport in Romania, a nation of 20 million. The most successful club is Steaua Bucharest, who were the first Eastern European side to win the European Cup and the European Supercup in 1986. Romania is one of only four national teams from Europe that took part in the first World Cup in 1930. The Romania national football team has taken part in seven FIFA World Cups and had its most successful run during the 1990s, when they reached the quarterfinals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, losing to Sweden in the penalty shootout. Alexandru Dedu
Alexandru Mihai Dedu (born 15 September 1971 in Ploiești) is a retired Romanian handballer who played for the Romanian national team in line player position. He was part of the Romanian team which ranked eight at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. Cristian Gațu
Cristian Gațu (born 20 August 1945) is a retired Romanian handball player. He earned 212 caps with the national team, winning the world title in 1970 and 1974 and medalling at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. After retiring from competitions he became a coach and sports official, appointed as Secretary of State for Youth and Sports in 1991–1993 and President of the Romanian Handball Federation in 1997–2014. Biography Gațu was an ethnic Aromanian. He was born to a renowned sports journalist Petre Gațu. In his early years he studied civil engineering in Bucharest and competed nationally in chess, association football and handball, eventually choosing handball for his career. With Steaua București, he won ten national titles and the 1977 European Cup. He retired after spending two seasons in Italy with Tuscany Follonica in the 1980s, both as a player and a coach. Valentin Samungi
Valentin Samungi (born 27 January 1942) is a retired Romanian handball player. He won the world title in 1970 and an Olympic bronze medal in 1972. Samungi started playing handball in 1958, as a goalkeeper for CSS Bucharest. Between 1966 and 1977 he competed as a defender for Dinamo Bucharest. He was a member of the national team in 1961–1973 and played 113 matches scoring 134 goals. Cornel Oțelea
Cornel Oțelea (born 19 November 1940) is a former Romanian handball player who won the World Championships three times. Biography He has won three world titles, the European Champions Cup as a player (1968) and coach (1977), both with Steaua București. He was a coach of the Romania men's national handball team (bronze medal at the 1990 World Men's Handball Championship), and since 2008 he has coached the Steaua Bucharest men's handball team. Colonel Cornel Oțelea from the Ministry of National Defense was promoted to the rank of brigadier general (with one star), being subsequently transferred to the reserve on December 31, 1997. Romania Women's National Handball Team
The Romanian women's national team represents Romania in senior women's international handball and is controlled by the Romanian Handball Federation, the governing body for handball in Romania. It competes in the three major international tournaments; the Olympic Games, the IHF World Championship and the EHF European Championship. Since first entering World Championship, Romania are the only team to have appeared in all 25 tournaments to date. They were crowned winners in the IHF World Championship three times: 1956, 1960 and 1962, and finished as runners-up in 1973 and 2005 and also finished third in 2015.
