Ioan Olteanu
Ioan Olteanu (14 December 1839 – 29 November 1877) was a Romanian Greek Catholic hierarch. He was bishop of the Romanian Catholic Eparchy of Lugoj from 1870 to 1873 and the Romanian Catholic Eparchy of Oradea Mare from 1873 to 1877. Born in Sintești, Timiș, Banat, Austrian Empire (present day – Romania) in 1839, he was ordained a priest on 5 April 1863. He was confirmed the Bishop by the Holy See on 29 November 1870. He was consecrated to the Episcopate on 18 December 1870. The principal consecrator was Bishop Iosif Papp-Szilágyi. Ioan Ploscaru
Ioan Ploscaru (19 November 1911 – 31 July 1998) was a Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church. Born into a peasant family in Frata commune, Cluj County, he studied in Blaj. He was ordained a priest in 1933 and a bishop in November 1948. The latter ordainment was performed in secret by bishop Gerald O'Hara, shortly after the new Communist regime outlawed the church and arrested his predecessor, Ioan Bălan. Himself arrested in August 1949, Ploscaru spent a number of years in detention, including at the notorious Sighet Prison. After the collapse of the regime in 1989 and the church's legalization, he was the first Greek-Catholic bishop to officiate at a mass. This took place in January 1990, with the Romanian Orthodox Banat Metropolitan Nicolae Corneanu quickly agreeing to restore the Greek-Catholic churches in his province to their former owners. Ioan Bălan
Ioan Bălan (11 February 1880 – 4 August 1959) was a Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church. Biography He was born in Teiuș, Alba County, the son of Ștefan Bălan and Ana, née Muntean. After graduating high school in Blaj, he studied theology in Budapest, and was ordained a priest in 1903. He continued his studies in Vienna, moved to Blaj and then in 1909 to Bucharest, where a Greek-Catholic confessor was needed. In 1919 he returned to Blaj, becoming canon and in 1921 rector of the theological academy. In 1936, after Alexandru Nicolescu became Metropolitan of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia, he was consecrated Bishop of Lugoj. In 1948, the new Communist regime outlawed his church and he was arrested in October after refusing to convert to Romanian Orthodoxy. He was taken first to Dragoslavele Monastery, then to in early 1949 and to Sighet Prison in mid-1950. In 1955, he was forced to live at Curtea de Argeș Monastery. Alexandru Nicolescu
Alexandru Nicolescu (8 July 1882—5 June 1941) was a Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church. Born in Tulgheș, Harghita County, Transylvania, he studied at the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in Rome from 1898 to 1904, earning a doctorate in Philosophy and Theology. Returning to Blaj, he was sent as a missionary priest to North America. Once back in Transylvania, he taught of moral theology at the Blaj Theological Seminary. He was named Bishop of Lugoj in 1922, following the transfer of Valeriu Traian Frențiu to Oradea. In 1935, he was elected Metropolitan of Făgăraş and Alba Iulia.
